Shi-Hao Ni Kaihua

After the meeting had taken place and been concluded, Shi-Hao was happy to step out into the fresh air, away from the stink of booze. There was something on her mind, however, and she hoped to pursue it without offending the very person that interested her. Standing off slightly to the side, she waited patiently.

Then, thankfully rather quickly, Isikrio emerged. "Do you have a moment?" Shi-Hao asked, stepping forward with a friendly smile, making sure that the other women knew that she was speaking to her, specifically. Once she was definitely sure that she had Isi's attention, Shi-Hao continued; "I'm sorry to bother you, but... you mentioned your family, during the initial meeting. May I ask a little more about them?"

It was not meant to be intrusive, and she tried to ask as gently as possible, while giving Isi a chance to refuse, as well. Truthfully, Shi-Hao admired people like this, who tried their best and worked their hardest at whatever they did - she thought that Isi would be a good addition to the project, and she wanted to help her, to ensure that she could be part of the project.

Isikiro Sherazi Anazalrok

Isikiro was a bit more "immune" one might say, to the smells and stinks of the world, given that she gave off a few of her own. Most of her stinks were dirt, sweat, and coal though, and the occasional inkling smell of blood from her back, rather than booze. Shit if she had the kind of cash to afford that luxury (though a bottle or two would probably do her good--she did not realize it, but her resilient body was also resilient to booze).

Well anyways, as she was off and on her way, she was pulled aside for a second by that really rich and sweet-smelling lady. Surely Isi offended in comparison, given how different they were--her lovely smooth skin, sweet smells and fancy clothes; contrasted with Isikiro's rougher, worn skin, her odd stenches of coal and sweat, and her rough and rugged clothing. And yet... she did not strike. She found herself curious instead.

The question was deep for her; personal, but something that she felt was best explained so that people could at least try to understand where she and her usually bitchy attitude came from.
"M-Mah family?" she tilted her head, some of those loose, messy brown curls falling to one side. it was more of a surprise than anything.
"Well... ther's mah sister--she's 13... 'en ther's mah little brothers... one'f 'emz 10 'n th'other's 8. M'mother's a cripple... so she can't really do much f'er us no more... she gits angry 'bout that, which pisses me off cuz it ain't her damn fault!" she wasn't yelling at Shi-Hao, per se, but she did raise her voice as if to show that this was something she was very passionate about.

"Anyhoo... aye. purdy much ever' coin Ah make goes to 'em so they kin stay alahve, y'know?" That was about the extent of her family as she was willing to publicly reveal, because it summed them up nicely (minus the age gap between her and her siblings, which was a different story entirely)--she was a poor girl from a very poor family just trying to scrape enough money together to keep them alive. She wondered why this woman had asked, and thus voiced it.
"Whah d'ya ask?" she tilted her head again.

Shi-Hao Ni Kaihua

Shi-Hao knew, simply by the raising of the other woman's voice and the way she began so hesitantly, that it was difficult for her to speak about such things, and so asked nothing further. Instead, she gave a small nod, hoping to show that she understood. "I really admire your strength," the wealthy heiress revealed, completely honestly, "Your physical strength, of course, but also your strength of character. I've seen many people - with beginnings far less humble - do less noble things for their families when they were in need."

Letting that sink in, for a moment, Shi-Hao paused, taking a deep breath. "I... am a bit different, obviously, but I want to use my position - that I was given and continued to work for - to do something good. That's why I came here today. I want this city, a city like no other, to exist," Perhaps it sounded rehearsed, but only because Shi-Hao was well-taught in how to speak without offending other people, "Which is why I want to make sure that you can be a part of it."

Slowly holding out her hand for a handshake, she smiled softly, one corner of her mouth curving a little more than the other in a hopeful sort of way. "I have a proposition for you... so to speak. I want to hire you to work at building the city with us - full time, so no other jobs on top of it - and in exchange, I'll give your family a good place to stay and enough food to eat, without worries." There it was, all spelled out, no hidden strings attached. Now all Shi-Hao could do was wait for the response - and hope that she hadn't insulted Isikiro's pride with such an offer.

Isikiro simply shrugged for a moment. While she was often belligerent and aggressive, she was also very humble. She was confident in her skills, but usually the only time she ever had to bring those up was when she was warning someone not to piss her off before she jumped them and beat them to a pulp. She was a brawler for sure, and while those pants and long sleeves (which were slightly large on her, as if they had been hand-me-downs from someone else). "Ah jus do wut Ah can t'keep 'em safe 'n alahv." she admitted, also a bit humbled by her thick country accent.

Isi's forehead wrinkled a bit as she took this information in. "So... y'use y'er wealth t'help build up others... 'n create more wealth?" There was a reason that Isikiro was a staunch capitalist despite her miserably poverty-stricken upbringing. It was knowing that when given time/money/resources, many people would go on to help others with them and thus strengthen the working class, or something deep and political like that. "Ah definitely lahk th'idea of a city lahk that," she admitted, "'N ye... Ah wanna be part of'it."

Then came the proposition. In fact, it seemed too good to be true. "'r you f'er realz?!" she exclaimed, gawking at, well... how goddamn perfect that would be. "Ah... if y'er bein' serious 'bout all this wi'thou' any strings attached? Aye... Ah'm totally in on it." She took Shi-Hao's hand and shook it after learning that there was in fact no strings attached. "Y'got y'erself a deal! Ah promise Ah work as hard as Ah look... 'N Ah'll make sure to work jus' as hard f'er ya... jus''' thank'ee. Thank'ee so much..." she heaved a sigh of relief almost, as if a gigantic burden had just been lifted off her shoulders.

Shi-Hao Ni Kaihua

Isi's acceptance of her offer had Shi-Hao smiling brightly, quite relieved and happy at the same time, to have made someone else light up like that. "You're very welcome. I'm very glad that you accepted," She told the other woman honestly, returning the handshake firmly before answering Isi's previous question, "I love being able to help people like you - the ones who help themselves and just... need a little extra to get up on their feet, for whatever the reason might be."

She had no doubt that, once things were squared away with the new city and her family, that Isi would be able to walk on her own two feet, without any such assistance. That was what Shi-Hao wanted to help with. That was what she wanted to give her money to, to make reality. Not just a reality for this one young woman, but for many, many others as well.

Isi sighed softly and nodded. "Ah... Ah guess that's one way of puttin' it..." It was humbling, but necessary, Isi felt. There was no way people would realize just how horrifically poor she was if she didn't tell them. She had seen better off people look worse than her for wear.

"So... what now?" she asked with a curious tilt of her head again. "Ah mean... Ah don't wanna have to'wait f'er the city to come up outta nowhere be'fore Ah kin start workin' for ya 'n helpin' mah folks move in, y'know? Ah don't wanna sound like Ah'm tryin'a rush y'though 'r anythin'... just that y'er pretty much raht 'bout mah family's condition... th'sooner Ah kin properly provide f'er 'em... the better."

She hoped she didn't come off as offensive, but that was definitely on her mind now. She hoped that Shi-Hao would understand, since her siblings and mother were in fact her top priority, even more so than herself.

Shi-Hao wasn't offended in the slightest; she fully intended to allow Isi to move her family immediately. "Let's get your family moved as soon as possible," She agreed, "If you think that it can wait until tomorrow, I can have everything prepared so that they should be comfortable and not feel... overwhelmed." Her tone of voice should show that she meant no offense to the family, with those words.

"There's a small gate on the Southern side of the estate," She continued, "Right next to one of the guest houses; do you think that would be acceptable? I could meet you there, myself, to meet your family and help you settle them in." Shi-Hao would stay away, if Isi would rather, of course.

As a final thought, she added, "Once that's done, we can talk about the rest, okay? Getting this part taken care of is the most important."

Isikiro Sherazi Anazalrok

For the first time in probably years, a smile crept onto Isi's face. Not just some half-assed smirk or some weak little smile... but a sweet, genuinely grateful smile that also showed signs of relief. It made her look like an almost completely different person in contrast to the perma-frown she was usually wearing. "Ah... alright... that'll give me tahm t'tell 'em what's happnin' 'n stuff. That'd work real well, akchally."
She blushed a bit behind that sooty face of hers. "Aye... Ah think goin' from th'shitty li'l place we live in now to somethin' that akchally 'sembles a house would be more'n 'nuff to shock 'em good... 'n m, probably." she admitted, kicking the ground softly with her heavy boots. "tha'd probz be f'er th'best."

"Gotche." she nodded at the arrangement of where to meet and when they would discuss the rest of the matter. With that all squared away, she promised that she'd return first thing tomorrow morning with her family in tow, waiting at that southern gate.

----
To say that her family were not intrigued and excited would be utter untruth, because few things could be farther from reality at this point. They were excited and trusted Isi that everything would be alright. Well... they could worry about the moving and shit later. For now, they were going to get a look at what would be their new home. (and if nothing else, they really didn't have a whole lot of stuff to move over *anyways*. they could hardly afford food. What made anyone think they had much more than that and a roof over their heads?)

It would definitely be a sight for Shi-Hao as well, to see the dark-skinned little family standing there all huddled together: the two small, skinny boys, the slightly skinny and older (but still very young) sister, and of course Isi herself, who seemed to have the most meat on her bones of the group. Most noticeably was Isikiro's mother on Isi's back, with the younger sister holding her mother's crutches. The woman's legs looked okay (but were covered in pants and boots), but she was not able to walk on them. The exact status of the injury had not been made clear to anyone but Isi and her family.
"Now Ah reckon we wait..." she told the others, but did not think that her benefactor would keep them waiting for too long...

Shi-Hao Ni Kaihua

That morning, the young heiress made sure to dress in her casual traveling clothes, as to not intimidate the family that would be moving into the guest house today. Her tunic and capri pants (obviously worn and well used by Shi-Hao herself) were quite common among the working class, and she hoped that it would at least make her seem normal, despite the huge walls and gates around the several acres of land that was the Ni Kaihua estate.

As soon as she reached the side gate, Shi-Hao caught sight of her new guests and was unable to stop the friendly smile that curved at her lips. "Hello," She greeted with a wave, moving to access the mechanism for the gate herself, winching it open, "Welcome to my home - it's wonderful to have you here." Though she wanted to be welcoming, Shi-Hao was also trying to be calm, rather than chipper and overbearing.

Stepping aside, she allowed the entire family to wander in and look around before directing their attention to a little path which lead to a cottage - well, she would call it a cottage, but this particular family would probably think of it as a mansion. Enough bedrooms for each of them, plus a working kitchen... it would likely be the best they'd ever lived in.

A Small Aside Empty

Isikiro Sherazi Anazalrok

Poverty-stricken as they were, they were very friendly. Clearly impoverishment had humbled them, and they did not quite seem nearly as aggressive as Isi had been. It seemed that the oldest girl took the brunt of... well, basically everything, in the hopes that her family could try to live decently. She had had marginal success... but this... this would be enough for them for aaaaages.

they were awestruck even before reaching the gates. Reaching the gates and peeking inside though... now that was something else. When Isi saw Shi-Hao approaching, she waved without dropping her mother (so it was kind of weak, but she was excused), and the others smiled at her too, overwhelmingly grateful for this benefactor that Isikiro had met.

"Put me down, Isi..." her mother beseeched, reaching over and taking one of her crutches from her 2nd daughter, and then the other as she slowly got to her feet. both of her legs seemed fairly bad, as she switched from one to the other with each step. "Ah wanna see it f'er m'self..."
Yup. the whole family had Isi's accent. Well, there was no telling if their father had had it... but those that were living certainly did.

they all did wander in, with the awe and wonder of a 2-year-old getting a huge gift for Christmas or something. Even Isi was genuinely awestruck at it all, having never set foot in a place that she could call "hers" that was nearly this big. Okay so it wasn't hers still; it was technically rented... but still. Hopefully they could stay here long enough for the others to also grow and thrive here and become hard workers themselves. Isi didn't want to subject a 13, 10, and 8-year-old to hard physical labor that young.

Of course, she remembered that this was not free, and so turned to Shi-Hao after a few more minutes while the family settled in. "So... y'mentioned yesterday that we'd figger ou' th'terms 'n conditions 'r whatever t'day... so what do y'want me t'do whal we wait f'er the city to mater'ylize?"

Shi-Hao Ni Kaihua

"Well," Shi-Hao began, at the same time taking a deep breath, "Truthfully, I don't have any labor that needs doing. The estates are functioning as intended and I'm holding off on any big projects, because of the city building." She knew that it would not be what Isi wanted to hear, but Shi-Hao really didn't even need the help yet; she just wanted for the other woman's family to be provided for now.

It was amazing to watch the impoverished family roam the cottage, exploring the space that had been given to them. "Still," She picked up again, before Isi could become too distressed, "There are a few other things that I could use help with. There just a bit less... work and more... for companionship. What I really need is more like a personal assistant, kind of."

Isikiro Sherazi Anazalrok

Isikiro listened to the terms, and to her surprise, they were... well, surprising. She had expected physical labor of some sort, like maybe renovating or expanding the estate or something like that. She was a physical laborer to the max, and her body and calloused hands showed this. She was good at most things physical, but one thing was certain--if Isikiro Sherazi Anazalrok started a project, she would not stop until it was finished (or the project was cancelled or made impractical).

And yet... she didn't want to wait solely for physical labor to be on the list, since she didn't want her little starving family to have to wait for that long. She had been about to ask what Shi-Hao *did* want though, before the older woman answered.
"welll... wut 'xactly does an, um... "personal 'sisstant" err... do?" she asked curiously. She'd heard of some that were more like 'sexual partners', although she oped sincerely that that was not the intent of this woman.
"Er... wha'do Ah gotta do?" Her brown eyes met Shi-Hao's, curiously although slightly reservedly. What had she just gotten herself into?

"You're going to think that it's silly," Shi-Hao warned with a bit of a wry smile, "I have connections, yes, but honestly I don't have friends, or anything like that. You could call it the whims of a rich woman, but... I'd like it, if we could be friends? Even if it's just for your job."

It was true; the heiress never bothered making friends on her level of the social ladder, and because she traveled incognito, she didn't make many below it, really. Though, by the same token, Shi-Hao didn't think that someone who worked as hard as Isi did must have many friends herself (unless you counted family).

"I know that it's not much of a job," She conceded, "So if you think it's too ridiculous, I understand entirely."

Isikiro listened, and was relieved about a few things and still surprised about others. "well... what 'xactly does "bein' y'er friend" entail?" she asked curiously, "Ah mean... Ah don't 'xactly have friends o' mah own ayther... but if it's anythin' lahk how we've been th'last couple o' days... 'en sure. Ah think Ah could do that..."

"ey..." she shrugged, "Ah sahned up f'er it... so Ah guess Ah gotta do it 'r back down... 'n Ah don't wanna back down... Ah guess Ah just gotta wait t'learn what all y'want me t'do... 'n then we 'kin go from there..." She honestly couldn't figure out what Shi-Hao would want with her in this way, other than company...what did she do on her free time? Isi didn't even know what free time properly was. This was technically not even free time. This was helping move her family and discuss a business deal.
She looked curiously at Shi-Hao again, waiting for a response.

Shi-Hao considered that, for a moment. What did being her friend mean? Then, she had an idea - but she wasn't sure how much Isi would like it.

"How about this," She began with another proposal, "You stay with your family tonight and just have some time to be together - have a good meal, get your things where you'd like them... all of that. Then, tomorrow, we'll do a trial run, for the both of us. Does that sound acceptable?"

Isikiro Sherazi Anazalrok

Isikiro listened to the offer, whicih was more than reasonable, she agreed. "Ah don't even know what Ah'll do wit' mahself... "Ah'm usually workin' or Ah'm so beat that Ah'm asleep within seconds of gettin' insahd... Ah kin figger somethin' out tho" she cracked a hoarse chuckle at this remark.
"But aye... tha' sounds good t'me. Thank'ee 'gain, bah th'way." she couldn't help but thank her benevolent benefactor--yet again. She had probably literally just saved their lives, in terms of how they would have ended up, anyways.
----
The evening with Isi's family was rather quiet, as they got adjusted into their new home. they were still rather awestruck about everything, and were almost a bit overwhelmed. Isi promised that they'd be able to live well, and that she'd continue to work hard to ensure that they earned their keep. Otherwise, it was the first time in a long time that Isi got to properly converse with her family and such. She was done with the mines... at least till conditions improved there (since she enjoyed that kind of work... she felt at home surrounded by rock and metal). Either way... it was all in all one of the best nights of Isikiro's life.
----

the next morning, Isi used the shower for the first time in weeks (maybe months) and washed a whole shitload (no pun intended) of grime off of her body. The water was black and brown, but hey... she felt so much lighter. And now there was a place for her mother to wash the clothes, and so Isi wouldn't be so smelly and filthy. It was the least she felt she could do to look presentable to Shi-Hao today.
She didn't really have any formalwear, and so she just wore pants, a shirt (long-sleeved, despite the weather), and her coat (which was more to protect her body from the usual grime than keep her warm. she wasn't used to knowing that she might not need it), along with a nicer pair of boots she owned. Her clothes were not the pinnacle of fashiondom, but they were practical. She didn't do her hair, but left it hanging in messy, lank curls behind her back.

Now... she had to find Shi-Hao. She went to where they said they would meet, being a bit early to be polite and such. She felt so... airy... so light. she was still covered head to toe, not very keen on showing off her lacerated arms and legs, let alone the minced remains of what was once her back. Still... she didn't look half bad without all the soot and muck covering her. Now... she waited.

When Shi-Hao appeared, it was by looping her arm with Isi's own, smiling brightly, "Good morning!" Hopefully she hadn't startled her too badly, but she was feeling quite happy, herself. "Ready to get going?" the heiress asked, already leading Isi toward the front gates of the estate, where a horse-drawn carriage was waiting for them, manned by a smiling stableman. Helping Isi into the carriage, Shi-Hao hopped up afterward, tapping on the front window to signal for the ride to begin.

Dressed in comfortable clothes herself, Shi-Hao looked slightly better than yesterday, but not as fancy as the first day they'd met. She had a nice shirt and a skirt, along with a pair of flats - she looked like a citizen of the Middle Ring, rather than a noblewoman.

Isikiro Sherazi Anazalrok

Isi did smell a bit like some perfume she had found, figuring it was better than stinking like coal or sweat or permacrud. she did kind of jump when Shi-Hao appeared out of nowhere and latched her arm around hers, but that was fairly minor in retrospect.

She had always been used to just taking her two feet to get from once place to another, unable to afford much else than a decent pair of work boots anyways. Well... luckily she was presentable this time. her clothes and body were clean and she didn't stink, so that was about as good as Isikiro knew how to get. This was definitely all new culture for her.

"So... wher'we goin'?" she asked, realizing that she had no idea where they were going, and thus no idea what they might be getting into. She wasn't sure if she should just embrace it or if she should be frightened, but suddenly she did want to know what they were going to do today.

Shi-Hao Ni Kaihua

"Well," Shi-Hao began, smiling despite herself, thankful to not be going alone for a change, "About once a year, around this time... I do all of the girly things that are expected, you see?" She didn't know how to better explain it, really, but if Isi needed a better picture painted, Shi-Hao would go into detail. "I do, however, dislike going by myself - it's boring that way, because I have no one to laugh at all the silly parts with. I figured that we'd be good at that together."

It might have been a bit cruel to throw Isi right into the thick of things, but if she survived shopping, having her hair and nails done, pedicures and accessory shopping... she could do this job, no problem. Besides, it wasn't like she and Shi-Hao had nothing in common; even if they didn't know it yet.

Girly things, Girly things... think, Isi; think! What did girly things entail? what did girls do? Wait! she was a girl, and she did things! Maybe she could use some powerful deductive reasoning her and try to make an educated guess on what Shi-Hao was talking about!
So... she was a girl, and she did things like mining... building... but wait. She had said that she was not really going to be able to give Isi any physical labor this early on... so scratch that. what else did she do?
She... well, pretty much just ate, slept, worked, and... got into fights. And for some reason, Isi was fairly sure that Shi-Hao was not about to take the two of them to go pick fights with people. She looked too fancy for that (or maybe that was just her slanted perspective, ranking anything fancy if it looked nicer than what she wore, which, ironically and perhaps sadly, was her "best".

...Okay, so she had nothing. She surrendered herself to the risk she had just taken by not only volunteering for this job, but also for stepping inside this carriage without asking first where they were going or what they were doing.
"so... what 'xactly -are- um... "girly things"?" she tilted her head, "Ah... can't 'xactly say Ah've got much 'sperience 'n tha'regard, 'nless girls fight alot or somethin'... what'm Ah gettin' into, Ah guess ah should'ask?"

Oh dear. Well, Shi-Hao did enjoy a good fight - betting on them, at least - but that certainly wasn't what she was talking about, in this instance. Brushing a hand through her auburn hair, she tried to think of how to answer the question honestly, without scaring Isi off as well.

"While I won't deny the entertainment of a good fight," Shi-Hao prefaced the bad news, "That's not particularly what I meant by 'girly'... That usually means, in context, things like painting fingernails, or shopping for clothes. Things that heiresses generally can't avoid, because it's expected of them and if they don't do them, they don't get vital business connections. So... I do girly things so that other people will see them and think that I am nothing more than that."

Then, in a sheepish tone, "Though... I hoped that it would actually be fun to do them together. Less of a chore, you understand?"

Isikiro's face dropped. not in a sad or despairing sort of way, but more of an "oh-crap-I've-never-done-this-kind-of-thing-before" sort of way, since she was pretty much thinking  "oh crap I've never done anything like this before".

"Ah... Ah've never really had a makeover lahk tha' bef'er..." she admitted, "never really dun m'hair... 'or m'nails..." she revealed a pair of darker, rough-looking fingernails, "...or really even cleaned m'self up much more'n washin' the coal 'n shit off of me. 's'there a place that 'kin clean up 'kcess scar tissue 'tall?" She didn't want to show Shi-Hao, per se, but she had a lot of nasty scar tissue on her body from the whips cracking or other injuries. Some of it might have been restorable with the right care.
"'cuz yeah... that's why Ah don't really show m'arms 'r m'legs... 'r m'back." she admitted. otherwise... she was just going to accept the fact that she was going to feel really weird after today. She was not sure if that was good or bad just yet.

The question about scar tissue concerned Shi-Hao just a bit; she knew that things happened and that working in a mine was a tough job, but the fact that Isi had so many scars that she didn't show any of her body at all...? That didn't seem quite right. Particularly since Isi didn't seem to care much about the rest of her appearance.

"We could try to see a healer at the spa," Shi-Hao offered gently, trying to keep her voice neutral, "Where did you pick up your scars? Just... rocks falling? Accidents?" She had a feeling that she wouldn't like the answer she received, but Shi-Hao had to know. If someone had been abusing Isi... They hadn't known one another long yet, but the young heiress would damn sure do something about it.

It was true that Isi didn't care much about her appearance, but truth be told, that was mostly because she just didn't have anyone to impress. Her mother and siblings loved her anyways (she didn't have a face that only a mother could love, mind you. xD it was much prettier than that), and it wasn't like she had to impress rocks and coal.

"Aye... a bit o' that... 'n th'reast 'r from th'crack o'the whip." she shrugged, frowning. It was obviously not a fond subject, but Isi would definitely want it cleaned up if she could. She heard that some advanced healers could remove (or at least significantly diminish) scars completely. Something about spirit water, or in some cases, just high-level mastery.

"So aye... a healer maht be a good'ideer." she nodded slowly. "Ah 'kin show you if y'want? well... once we get to'an appropriate place..."

Shi-Hao nodded as well, but found herself unable to speak. The blood in her veins had run cold, at the knowledge of where Isi's scars had come from. She wasn't aware that whips were even used on workers - to her knowledge, they had only been used on slaves, a long time ago, or by war criminals back in Avatar Aang's time (though at the time of use they had been Fire Nation Soldiers).

Swallowing a lump in her throat, Shi-Hao ventured to ask, "They... do that often, then? At the mine?" Though her voice was calm, Isi might notice the steel beneath it, promising hell to pay (though not for her, of course).
