Meeting the Competition [Maya & Tami]

Maya	Zulera City. A city where dreams come true and fortunes are made, just the kind of place that attracted people like Maya. When the Avatar announced its completion it attracted all manner of criminals like a moth to flame. Sure, there was crime everywhere, but Zulera city was where the money was…and where there is money, there is crime. Maya moved to the city early, eager to establish roots there. Her criminal empire was already one of the largest, spanning the entire world, and she definitely wasn’t going to miss out Zulera City…a place many considered to be the jewel of the known world. The problem Maya now faced was the influx of new criminals. Hotshots who thought they could make a quick fortune. Running a gang here, extorting from the helpless there. It was very annoying, and Maya had to often squash out a few of these ‘would be criminals’ just to keep her own business running smoothly. There was one new player in Zulera City however, that greatly interested Maya… Tamiyo Mawas. It actually took Maya a bit of trouble just to discover the woman’s name, which was surprising as Maya had the most extensive information network in the known world. Aside from that, when Maya found out that some businesses on her turf were now paying protection to Tamiyo, she decided that she just had to meet the woman, and possibly strike a deal. Maya made her way to Tamiyo’s place of business unarmed and presented herself to the guards outside, her sharp eyes quickly taking in all they could about the two guards in front of her. “Barefoot, no weapons… earthbender, relies heavily on his bending. Water-pouch, dual-daggers…waterbender, prefers close ranged fighting.” she thought to herself, deducing their fighting preferences and abilities in a matter of seconds. She had to be prepared for anything, even though she had no intentions of fighting. “Hello boys~” she purred in a sing-song voice. “I am here to speak with Miss Mawas…tell her the Scarlet Blade would like to welcome her to Zulera City.” She said with a sweet smile. While the name ‘Maya’ was world renowned as a celebrity, ‘The Scarlet Blade’ was only known in crime circles as a one of the world’s most powerful crime lords. She waited for their response.

Tamiyo Mawas	The two men glanced at each other as the woman approached. Apprehensive leapt between their eyes as they both attempted to assess the situation silently, but failed to come to any kind of conclusion. They had both heard of the Scarlet Blade, of course – who hadn’t? The Earthbender shrugged. Raising his fist, he banged it on the door behind him twice before resuming his stoic stance. With an audible creak the door slid open, revealing a small but well-decorated room. Nobody appeared to have opened the door, as the only occupant of the room was a young man who sat on a sofa far from the opening, legs crossed at the knee as he read a book. He spared Maya a glance for only a second before returning to his book. “Welcome, Scarlet Blade. The boss has been looking forward to meeting you,” he said in a rough accent, a stark contrast to his clothing which was crisp and business-like. He pointed to one of the many doors that the room adjoined. “They’re still playing, but feel free to go in. Just try not to ruin the game, yeah?” He returned to his book instantly, somehow not caring what Maya’s next actions were. If the Scarlet Blade was to continue through the door, she would find a room that was vastly different to the earlier one. It was dark, with only a few candles spattered around on tables for light. At the far end of the large room, several figures gathered around a table, and the sounds of coin being exchanged could be heard. ”Don’t stand in the dark. Come over here where we can see you better,” came a voice, distinctly female. It appeared to come from the figure at the head of the table, with the largest pile of coins in front of her. ”This is over anyway.” She placed the cards that were in her hand down on the table face up, revealing three Aces and two Kings. Everybody else groaned, but the woman smiled sweetly, raking all the gold from the centre of the table into her pile. She clapped her hands once, and all of the men rose instantly. They tucked their chairs into the table before departing, several of them muttering unhappily at their losses. Apparently, this was quite a regular occurrence. ”Take a seat, Maya. Now, what can I do for you this evening?”

Maya	Maya strutted into the building gracefully, making sure not to waste the chance to get a good look around. When a young man sitting on a sofa greeted her, she responded with a curt nod, before looking towards the door the man gestured to. She entered the room to find a card game going on. She smirked as she saw the only other woman in the room reveal her winning hand and scoop up her gold. Maya waited for the men to leave the room before stepping forward and taking a seat opposite Tamiyo. She was wearing a soft pink Kimono, cut in a very flattering manner with a long slit in the skirt to show of her leg. Her feet were adorned in a pair of black heels, held together with a few beautifully designed straps, which accentuated some of womanly features even more. Maya let her arms rest daintily on the chair’s arm-rests and crossed her silky-smooth, fully exposed legs. “Tamiyo,” began Maya as she flicked a band of hair out of her eyes, “a pleasure to finally meet you. Been having a lucky night I see…” she smirked, gesturing over to Tamiyo’s pile of gold. Maya of course knew that it had nothing at all to do with luck. Maya didn’t waste any time when it came time to discussing the reason for her visit. “Now Tami…may I call you Tami?” she began, leaning forward slightly. “Here we are today in Zulera City for the same reason…wealth, power and influence. But we aren’t alone. There is literally a rush for the spot on top, and every little peasant who thinks he is worth something is starting up a gang. Now the majority of them pose no threat, but there are some that do. I know you must have heard of Maranzano already, as well as the woman calling herself ‘Robin.’ Then there is that ex-shadow Minato and his bloodthirsty crew. My point is that soon everyone will be scrambling around fighting over who gets what.” Maya paused, adjusted herself on her seat for a moment before continuing. “With this in mind, I’d like to make you a deal…” she said with a smirk, now leaning back comfortably.

Tamiyo Mawas	The blonde glanced at the pile of gold for a second before shrugging. All of the money that she won was already hers anyway, since she paid the wages of the other players. But, nonetheless, it was nice to win. Tam listened to Maya’s speech only half-heartedly, as most of her attention was on the pile of gold which she had started to count. She took in everything that the Scarlet Blade had to say, however, and once she had finished counting she looked up. ”Let them scramble,” she said, waving a hand uninterestedly. ”The ants will fight amongst themselves until they become extinct. The whims of such creatures bears no interest for me – but I have heard of the others you have spoken ok.” She picked up the deck of cards next to her, fingering slowly through them. ”The King.” She placed down the King of Spades on the table. ”Maranzano is a shrewd operator, that much is clear. He’s collected quite a team around him, but even the King must bow to the Queen,” she said, placing the Queen of Hearts on the table next to the King. ”Yourself,” she said, nodding her head slightly at the woman. ”Your empire is certainly vast – as I understand it, you own more brothels and casinos than all of the other criminals in the city combined. But even the greatest empire can fall to a man with no morals.” She placed the Jack of Clubs on the table. ”Minato and his men are no more than thugs, but they are effective. They certainly have the potential to cause a lot of trouble for those who would not want it. Which leads us to our fourth big player…” The Ace of Diamonds she set on its side in front of the other three cards. ”Robin, as I understand it, is ambitious to a fault. She hides her direct involvement in the crimes she commits, making it difficult to intercept her actions.” She brought the four cards together in one pile, with the Queen on the top. ”Together you make up the underworld of Zulera City, am I correct? Between the four of you, you seem to have every aspect of the criminal lifestyle down – the citizens should shudder at the mere thought of you.” She chuckled softly, putting the cards back into the deck and absent-mindedly shuffling it. ”You might find yourself asking what my role is in all of this,” she said, a thin smile on her face. She leaned forwards slightly to get closer to Maya. ”I’m the one who holds all the cards, my Queen. Now,” she took a sip of her drink, which was running dangerously low. ”What kind of deal did you want to make?”

Maya	Maya watched Tamiyo’s little show with great interest and smirked at its conclusion. “Very clever,” said Maya with a chuckle, “I must remember to bring something for show-and-tell as well next time we meet.” Maya leaned back and switched legs, crossing the left over her right. “It is true I own more casinos and brothels then the rest of the bosses combined. In fact I was in the business long before Avatar Zulera was in diapers. I have played this game with people like you countless times. In Ba Sing Se, Gaoling, Makapu, Omashu, the Fire Nation Capital, Ember Island, Fire Fountain City, the Water Tribe Capitals, even in the Air Temples…Zulera City is just another city to me, I did not come here to make my fortune…I have already made it a hundred times over.” Maya leaned forward, placing her hand on the table. “My empire spans the world over; I do not care about gaining more turf, or exploiting a couple of shop owners…my real interest is information. It is the only currency that I care for and the reason why I came to you…What I am proposing is something of a trade agreement. With all the wealth coming into this city, I need an accountant who can feed me information on certain individual’s finances. I figured why not use the best this city has to offer…you. Now I do not expect this for free of course. In return, I will give you access to my entire shadow network and any information you may need…A favor for a favor, information for information. In addition, I will allow you to continue your operations in peace, and turn a blind eye to your activities in the city outside my field of entertainment…within reason of course.”

Tamiyo Mawas	Tamiyo listened carefully to the other woman’s words, and before she knew it she had a wide smile on her face. ”It sounds to me like you already know what you’re after, and are probably aware that I already have the information. I’ve been watching your empire for a long time, Maya – and I have to say I’m impressed. But, you should know that I’m still looking for employees, if you’re that desperate,” she said with a flirtatious wink. ”But, tell me – what in particular do I have to gain from this arrangement? My own information gatherers are plentiful and talented, and have never failed to get me something I need. As for your turning a blind eye to my operations, who is it who says that I need to watch out for you? You may be powerful, Scarlet Blade, but so am I. It seems to me that you seek a very one-sided agreement with little to offer on your end. How about we sweeten the bargain, hm?” ”What I propose to you is more of a partnership – it will leave both of us better off, and the city a much better place. With our two organisation working together, there’s nothing that can stand in our way.” She leaned forwards, glaring into Maya’s eyes. ”Especially the other members of the pack,” she said, motioning to her cards. The meaning was obvious – she wanted to destroy Robin, Maranzano and Minato. But she would need help to get it done efficiently.

Maya	Tamiyo certainly had spirit. Maya couldn’t help but be impressed at her as she delivered her speech with poise and confidence. She was playing the game very well and reminded Maya of herself when she was younger. When she commented about needing more employees, Maya simply giggled. “Well I will be sure to send you some résumés then,” she retorted with a mischievous grin. Maya nodded in agreement at what she said next. “Very well, putting my original offer aside…I quite like your idea of sweetening the deal.” Maya reached forward and scooped up the cards on the table. “To be honest I didn’t think you would be inclined to forge an alliance. I am pleasantly surprised though…a partnership may well be in our best interests, as well as the city’s considering the brutality and cold-bloodedness of the other bosses.” Maya raised an eyebrow and tossed the cards back down one by one. “They are all still powerful, and dangerous. Even we work together; there is the risk that the remaining three bosses join forces. Unless we manage to make them weaken each other, or better yet take each other out… Shouldn’t be too tough between the two of us, but we would need a plan.”

Tamiyo Mawas	”I’m always willing to strengthen my hold on the city, Maya – it just so happens that this time we’re both gripping the city together. The arrangement will work, I’m sure. As for taking out the others, I’m sure it will be easier than you expect…” ”All we need to do is work out who to take down first. I have links that can be made into any of the organisations, we just have to choose one. I think,” she picked up a card and turned it over, revealing the Jack of Clubs. ”That Minato has to be our first target. His tactics leave a lot of enemies for him, and we can exploit them to our own gain. Once he is removed from the equation, our empire will be large enough to move on Robin and Maranzano. It would also give us a good chance on gathering more intel on the two – I feel that they will be harder to take than Minato, after all.” She turned the Jack back over and pushed it as well as two other cards over to Maya. ”Take your pick, Scarlet Blade.”

Maya	“Oh I do not believe it will be overly hard,” grinned Maya, “In fact, Robin has already approached me. She has this obsession with The Amulet of Tsun that will put her in direct conflict with the White Lotus. She has overplayed her hand and I believe we do not even have to concern ourselves with her. Her own ambition will destroy her.” Maya then scooped up the jack that lay on the table. “Minato is definitely has many enemies. That vigilante Obsidian in particular seems to have some kind of personal vendetta against him.” She said as she twirled the card in her hand. “Minato has muscle though…his followers are all veteran ex-Shadows from the War of Tipped Scales…Quite formidable in combat and with advanced battle tactics. Nothing that we can’t handle of course, but if we can use others as cannon fodder for his elite troops, we will be better off to deal with Maranzano.”

Tamiyo Mawas	The blonde nodded at Maya’s words. ”I have heard the rumours about this Obsidian – if they are true, maybe we can use him to our advantage. With a healthy push in the right direction, perhaps he can do our job for us. Although I would be willing to send my own men against Minato’s, perhaps you are right that it would be best if we were to limit our own casualties until it is time to play our hand.” She absent-mindedly twirled a strand of her hair as she thought deeper on the matter. ”I doubt that this Obsidian knows where Minato is, but that is where we have the advantage.” She pushed her chair back slightly and rose from it, walking slowly over to the wall where a small device sat on top of a table. She pressed a button on it, causing it to hum as she cleared her throat. ”Bring in number 42. And a pair of mojitos,” she said, before releasing the button. She turned to smile at Maya before taking her seat again and pulling her chair in. After only a few seconds, there was a knock at the door. Tamiyo raised a hand and clicked her fingers, causing the door to open and a man to walk in holding a silver platter. He moved quickly to the table and set it down, revealing what was upon it – a file and two glasses. He removed the items and bowed slightly to the women before retreating quickly, closing the door silently behind him. Tamiyo pulled one of the mojitos towards her and took a sip before opening the file in the middle of the table, revealing a detailed map of Zulera City. ”These are all the activities and locations linked with Minato. I have talked with a few reputable sources, and managed to cross off a few of them. With a bit of intuition, I guess that he’s operating mainly from here,” she pointed to a building on the outskirts of town, signified with a red cross. ”If we can somehow convince Obsidian of the truth of this, he might finish off the gang without us even having to lift a finger. And who knows, maybe they’ll both take each other down and leave us with the spoils.” She turned the page in the file, revealing a picture of Minato. ”The only problem is convincing this vigilante of our plan. We need to set up some kind of rendezvous – and that is where you come in. I’m sure somebody who works for you has heard rumours of where the metal man is staying, maybe even somebody who has spoken with him. If you can get us both in a secure location, I’m sure I’ll be able to talk him into it.”

Maya	Maya elegantly scooped up the Majito and gave Tamiyo a nod of thanks. “Oh no, I would not let you send your men alone. If we are going to be partners, we share the risk as well as the reward. My original point was that even if The Vigilante could substantially weaken Minato’s forces, it will save us a lot of resources.” Maya took a sip of the Majito and grinned as Tamiyo showed her the file. “He is indeed based there, I have many of Minato’s men that visit The Blooming Rose for…entertainment,” she giggled. “as for the location of Obsidian…he is very secretive, but I have estimated the location of his main base based on the time it takes him to reach ‘crime scenes.’” “That should making finding his exact location a simple matter indeed,” said Maya as she sipped her drink, “give me some time and I’ll have it. If you believe you can convince him, I am sure I can arrange a rendezvous of sorts. ”

Tamiyo Mawas	Tamiyo looked at the map once more, nodding to herself. ”I should be able to convince him. From what I can tell, he has no love for Minato or his men – a fact that I can exploit in him. As for where to meet, perhaps we can find some neutral ground where he feels more comfortable. I doubt breaking into his home would give off a good first impression.” Her fingers brushed the file lightly as she glanced over the map of Zulera City. ”I own an apartment near to the centre of town that might prove useful. It doesn’t currently see any use, but I’m sure my boys could clean it up for a meeting.” She took a sip of her mojito and looked up at Maya. ”Once Obsidian has done our work for us, we can move in and divide up Minato’s empire as we see fit. An excellent business deal, if I do say so myself,” she said with a grin, before extending her glass into the air in front of her. ”A toast – to us and our new partnership.”

Maya	“Then we have a plan,” said Maya with a pleased grin, “I find Obsidian and arrange the meet, you get him to play along and we get to split up Minato’s entire empire without even lifting a finger, strengthening our own cause and eliminating a powerful enemy in one fell swoop. Low risk, high reward…my favourite kind of endeavour!” She continued before lifting her glass, “To us, our partnership and our new city!”
