Laksha Indiri Arvanti

Two years... it had been two whole years since the War of Tipped Scales. That was two years too long for Laksha, who almost felt restless, among other things. Her emotions were mixed, and she did not know what to make of them.

Strolling along the outskirts of Gaoling helped her sort of, but at the same time, made her feel forlorn. As she gazed back towards the bustling market square, she almost longed to see enemy tanks or airships appear on the horizon so she could draw her weapons again and sound the horn to gather her troops to prepare for battle.

But why? Death was not a pleasant thing, and Laksha had been taught that. War was an ugly thing, but sometimes was a necessary evil to work as a solution. Digging her bare toes into the sand, the decorated Kyoshi Warrior sighed, sitting down on a rock that she bended out of the ground, without lifting her feet or freeing the dust that had gotten caught between her toes.

"And for what? I do not wish death upon people... but what else am I useful for? Do I even have any purpose in this strange and foreign world now that there is no use for people of my kind? I was built for war... my uniform, my weapons, and even my body visibly reflect it."
she glanced down at a few decorations that her Kyoshi armor had received during her years of dedicated combat for the Earth Kingdom.

Laksha was known for going off by herself all the time, and few understood why. She would take long strolls, mumbling to herself to musing inside her head. She was almost never seen wearing anything but her uniforms, of which she had many, all of which cared for with utmost devotion.

"everything I put into my hands... I was trained to use nothing but instruments of death." she ruminated as she spread out her fans, holding them in her gloved hands as she looked down at them. "the moment something comes into my grip, those around me know that someone is about to die. Is this really who I am? Am I nothing but a ruthless killer?"

She sighed again, gazing hopelessly out onto the horizon. Maybe one day things would change. However, to try and get over 21 years of military out of a woman's head was a task that was easier said than done.
Returning towards the central market district, Laksha sort of got lost in the crowds till she seated herself at a table by herself out of the center of the square, but still easily visible. Reaching into her bag, she pulled out, of all things, a chess set, laying the board out in front of her and setting up the pieces even though she was all alone. It was a thinking game of cunning and war strategy, with sacrifices and tactics and keys to astounding victories or devastating defeats. She enjoyed this game, even on her own.

While she was quiet and did not draw attention to herself, she certainly probably looked out of place, being fully decked out in her decorated uniform and all, and playing chess all by herself.

Kumo Ianus

Kumo smiled as she strolled through the streets of Gaoling; the sun was pleasant upon her middle-aged features, and many small children waved at her as she passed. She waved back, delighted in this beautiful Saturday morning. Her thoughts strayed towards the lessons she had planned for Monday and she pulled out a small pad of paper and a pen, writing new ideas down for the week to come.

Nearly bumping into a small group, she decided to put the pen and paper away so that she could pay attention to the road. Her hands floated to the pendant around her neck, her thoughts straying to the edges of her mind where she recalled naught of her past.

A small crease appeared in between her eyebrows as she pulled and tugged at the veil concealing her true identity and eventually she gave up, buying a small pastry from a baker instead. While she did not often treat herself, this was the eve of the day she had arrived in Gaoling all those years ago.

She ate the pastry slowly enough, heading towards the central markets and to the parks surrounding them. A strange woman decked in Kyoshi warrior garb sat at one of the tables, setting up the pieces of a chest game.

Kumo finished her pastry, heading over to the woman. A battle of intellectual strategy would most definitely take her mind off of finding her identity, and she hoped she could play against the stranger in town.

"May I join in, miss?" Kumo asked her with a small smile.

Laksha Indiri Arvanti

It was difficult for Laksha to adjust to the real world outside of the battlefield, and so she would often do the next best thing, which usually involved her and a chessboard.
She was deep in thought, playing both sides of the game as if it was a life-and-death war game. one major difference, however, was that instead of it being about protecting the king and queen, it was about getting one side into a position where any move would likely lead to destruction. Sometimes, the king lived; other times, he fell. It seemed that the queen or knights or other powerful pieces would take over as "leaders" and sometimes lead what remained of the army to victory, and other times suffer crushing defeat at the hands of the opposite-colored side.

"and yet..." she said to herself, holding a white pawn in one hand and a black pawn in another, "underneath out colors... our Reds of the Fire Nation; Blues of the Water Tribes; Greens of the Earth Kingdom... Are we not all human? we may not be the same--everyone has different skills; talents; strengths; weaknesses; hopes; fears... but we are all still human. What would the world be like if we just accepted people's differences instead of go to war with them... how different would my life have been if I understood more than just combat?"

she set the pieces back on the board before setting them up in formation again, this time the black pieces on her side, since she had had the white ones on her side the time before. it was time to commence in another game.
Her strategy this time had the white pieces commencing a full on charge towards the black pieces, who remained more tightly together in a more defensive array. Right before the white pieces were able to surround the black ones, however, the black ones struck out, breaking through a weaker line of the white's would-be siege, where several swift moves later, most of them had been knocked off the board, which was still littered with black pieces. it was clear who had won this battle.

She was only interrupted and brought back to reality by a gentler voice from in front of her, asking for permission to join. Laksha started for a moment before her eyes swiftly surveyed and assessed her situation. She was not under attack or in any danger, which was good.
"Of course." she replied, setting up the pieces, rotating the board 90 degrees. "Black or white?"
This was the reasoning for her half-rotation of the board. it would allow her to set up the pieces, and then rotate the board accordingly, based on the woman's choice.

"I am General Laksha Indiri Arvanti." she introduced herself politely. "you are?"
She was not exactly one who was skilled at giving greetings other than ones that were short and to-the-point like the one she had given.

Kumo Ianus

Kumo noted the warrior's start, a faint smile upon her lips as she surveyed the woman before her. Young and in her prime. Ah, how Kumo wished she could remember when she was in her prime.

"Of course. Black or white?" came the friendly enough response, and she rotated the board.

"Hm. Black, please," she said with another faint smile.

"I am General Laksha Indiri Arvanti. you are?"

"General? You look so young though... I am Kumo Ianus," Kumo responded simply enough. "You play the game on your own, I see?" she asked inquisitively. None of her questions were meant to bring the other woman discomfort; she was merely a curious woman by nature.

Laksha Indiri Arvanti

Laksha's youth was a part of her that she easily forgot and almost always overlooked. There were certain things that she had to be reminded of, and sadly, perhaps even ironically, being a woman was one of them. It was not necessarily even that she thought of herself as a man. It was that she thought of herself as a warrior first, and something like gender did not matter to her.

upon hearing black, she skillfully waved her hand, and the stone chess pieces assumed their positions: white in front of her, and black in front of Kumo.
"I am 23." she nodded as she made her first move, "the military was pretty much the only life I have ever known."
She was honest about her faults, and anytime she was judged for it, she reminded the people in question that it was not what was wrong with her--it was what had happened to her.
few save those who have also been to war are able to understand or comprehend it, but it is not as simple as being traumatized either. There is an emotional toll it takes. Aye, one can be desensitized from death with relative ease once they are on the battlefield, but what then? it does not make it any less wrong or right than before. You just adapt and get used to it. It molds you; shapes you. it is as ruthlessly unforgiving as any enemy you may face."

"I do. it is one of the few escapes I have in this world, it seems... one of the few ways that I can cope with my lack of a true place anymore. I thank you as well for being willing to play with me."

her words were not meant to be harsh, and they were not directed particularly at Kumo either. It was just a result of Laksha's slanted view of the world, which in turn had come from war.
