Subject: The Explosion Across Town (Open to All) Wed Sep 11, 2013 12:14 am

Minali Otoyome	Toys of the West was a small, yet prominent shop near the center of town, selling all manner of wind-up toys and gadgets for children. Today, however, the 'closed' sign hung haphazardly from the window, causing parents to pull their disappointed children past without so much as looking in through the front window. In a single moment, everything changed (no, the Fire Nation didn't attack). A large blast from the back of the shop sounded off with a large onomatopoeic sound: "Boom!" Rubble exploded from the back wall of the toy shop, obliterating most of the building behind it. A young girl had been expelled forcefully from the building during the explosion, smashing into the ground. On her right arm was a huge machine that encompassed her entire limb, making it seem far too large for her body. The source of the explosion would be unclear, if viewing from a position on the street. Several civilians began to panic, running across the streets and into buildings for cover; from what, they did not know. Groaning and grabbing her forehead, the young woman tried to lift herself up. She was clearly dazed and disoriented from being chucked headlong into the flagstone street like a rag doll.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	The way his sister had hyped it up, Akhet half expected Fire Fountain City to have been recently paved with solid gold. He did not assume that it was true, and so upon arriving there again, he was not surprised to see that little had changed. It was still a thriving and bustling city full of all varieties and classes of life. It was like a Fire Nation version of the Water Tribe city that Akhet and his family had lived in. Most things were running smoothly the way the probably did every day, although there was one majorly large disruption that sort of threw off the order that the Fire Nation seemed to emanate as something of an aura. "well holy shit!" he exclaimed, as he was not far from the scene of the incident. he swore he felt the ground shake under him. However... he was no coward. If anything, he would rub it into his cousin Zakura's face next time they reunited. The two of them were total thrill-seekers. Following his ears and perhaps also the cloud of dust until he reached the source, whichw as tricky given the way the buildings and the streets were lined up and such. He found a rather cute looking girl about his age sprawled on the ground with big-ass piece of metal around her arm. Not exactly sure what it was, or what had happened, he bent down towards her, chuckling. "You alright, missy?" She was probably not much younger than he was, or she might have been older even. Either way, he reached out his hand in an offer to help her up. "Need help getting back on your feet, or are you comfortable?" Such were Akhet's witticisms anyways.

Minali Otoyome	Blurry brown eyes opened at the sound of his voice, trying to focus, to see who was speaking. Her gaze fell on him for a brief moment, lack of recognition clear in the way her brows furrowed. Moving on, she glanced over his right shoulder, looking back at the large hole in the brick wall. All at once, her eyes grew wide and she was instantly alert. "Get down!" She hollered out, accent barely discernible. Lifting her machine-encased right arm, she'd shove against his side, trying to push him over toward the street, out of the way of... whatever was coming. Once the girl managed to catch her balance, her arms braced and let her jump up to the left, back a good few feet; her actions fueled by pure adrenaline, giving her strength beyond the norm. A crossbow bolt buried itself in the ground, sticking out of the very spot that she had occupied, mere seconds after she had vacated it.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	Akhet was quick to act and very quick to react on general bases. This time was luckily no different. The moment she shouted that,. he wasted no time in ducing and shifting to the side, which she seemed to help him with via a sweep. He was admittedly surprised by it all, but he was not left dumbfounded as some people might have been. "good eye." he chuckled, standing back up, looking a bit surprised but not terribly fazed. "so what is that crazy contraption... and where'd that crossbow bolt come from? I'd hardly call this a welcoming gift, unless this is how you flirt." he chuckled, being something of a jokester himself. More than that, he liked seeing the way people reacted to things, both positive and negative--so he was not even purposely trying to push any buttons.

Minali Otoyome	Before the girl could answer him - or, more likely, snap at him to be quiet until she'd sorted out the danger - something quite large burst from the hole in her shop. Instinctively, Minali took a defensive stance, the large metal arm-frame in front of her as a guard, but there was no need; the figure merely bolted, its mission - whatever it happened to be - apparently carried out, at least for now. As they were shrouded in black clothing, a cowl and cape, it was impossible to see much of anything, except that the assailant was rather small. Cursing, she rose from her crouched position, "Son'ova one-eyed hog monkey!" Her face was flushed with rage, and she took her anger out by stomping her foot against the broken flagstones beneath her. Now that she wasn't trying to warn him, her accent was allowed to shine through, full-force. Then, she turned to Ahket, a hint of irritation still on her features as she began to answer his questions all in a rush; apparently she remembered each and every one, despite the danger of the situation. "Ah ain't alright; m'hurtin' an' sore all over," She began with his first question, "Ah can get m'self up, th'crazy contraption is m'quake fist that Ah've been workin' on fer years an' years now - " She takes a deep breath, still speaking at the same pace, "Th'crossbow bolt was from th'same black-wearin' sneak thief wha' just ran off, an' Ah most certainly didn' have a hand in makin' it a welcome. So... there!"

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	Akhet did not react at her accent, although perhaps he found it kind of cute. Like his sister, he was good at keeping people guessing, and keeping quiet about his grand intentions, while only revealing one little step at a time. It did not take a genius to figure out that the little cloaked man (woman?) was the saboteur that was probably behind the explosion. Although, who would want to blow up a toy store and why, was beyond Akhet's mind. Surely there was something greater at risk here that he did not know (and/or perhaps did not care) about. "well then," he put his wrapped hands in his pockets, casually shuffling a few feet away, "that leaves one simple question--what are you going to do about it? your store was blown apart, you got a rather good knock on your head, and the one behind it all escaped, and seems he would have regardless of my presence. Does the story end here, or do we turn the page and see where it leads?" Akhet's eyes only briefly wandered--most of this time was spent looking at either that weird, useless-looking deadweight attached to her arm, or at her rather cute little face. He did want to get to the bottom of this mystery (for that was what it was to him), as while he liked keeping others guessing, he was not fond of life giving him the same treatment.

Minali Otoyome	Her expression changed as he spoke, going from vague irritation to silent indignation; her anger not necessarily directed at Ahket (or at least not entirely). Setting her chin defiantly, Minali spun on her heels without a word, running off as fast as she could manage, tucking the large metallic frame close to her body, so that it wouldn't throw off her balance. She couldn't leave it; it was too valuable to her to risk it being stolen, and, in the event she caught the criminal, she'd definitely need it. Though she'd never admit it, she wasn't sure that her Quake-Fist was ready for a real combat trial; assuming that she could catch the criminal at all. Even if she had been unencumbered by the heavy steel machienery, the assailant was probably running too fast for her to catch him. It burned her up, but it was the truth. Still, she would try... and not only because of what that boy said, darnit!

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	With a chuckle, Akhet set off after her, his lithe athletic frame easily able to keep up with hers because of his own speed as well as his lack of being encumbered with a heavy, goofy-looking, and somewhat impractical-seeming device. "Tell ya what," he chuckled, running beside her for a moment, "I'll catch him, and then hold him down and let you punch him with that thing of yours." he winked. he was being playful, buy knew it would trigger some kind of reaction, because he was basically teasing her. It was not to be mean--it was just sort of how he was. He tormented his sister with things like this (usually about her height) despite her being 11 years older than him. He took off at a faster speed to try and catch him, mostly because he wanted to see who he was and what he wanted.

Minali Otoyome	That wink drew a small, scandalized noise from Minali - it was almost a squeak. Before she could open her mouth to retort, the boy took off with a burst of speed, leaving her behind in the dust. Oh, she was going to tell him off, when she caught up with him! Trying to control her rapid breathing, she continued on, doggedly trying to keep in pursuit, however far behind she was. Meanwhile, Ahket would be closing in on the shrouded criminal, several blocks ahead of Minali. He was within easy striking distance, now, unprepared for a second pursuer, let alone one so fast. Without a word, he made a sharp turn, trying to duck down an alleyway.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	Instead of trying to zip down an alley to confront an armed criminal (for he at least had some kind of bolt-shooting crossbow or something), he decided to take a more subtle approach. Granted, his blue clothing might have been an indicator of it, but that did not stop him from being any less of a skilled waterbender. Right before he was about to round the corner, he stopped, instead slinging the water down the alley, freezing it as he went and then dashing down to see what had happened. he had slowed the thief's progress, and he helped solidify him by freezing basically eveything but his face as he got the water together. "Now... you're going to hold still till my cute little lady friend gets here." he grinned smugly at whoever was behind this cloak and mask. The phrase 'lady-friend' did not necessarily insinuate a romantic relationship, let alone this early in meeting, but the curly-haired broad was female, and so he could not exactly say man-friend. This was the scene that she would come across when she arrived, as Akhet's trail was fairly easy to follow.

Minali Otoyome	Panting and clutching at her side as she rounded the corner, Minali was greeted by a strange sight indeed; the strange person that had attacked her had been fully restrained by the rather vexing boy. Slowing to a walk, allowing the stitch in her side a rest, she meandered up to the frozen criminal, her eyes narrowing. This time when she spoke, her tone was clipped, accent barely detectable; "You blew up my shop," She growled, pointing an accusing finger at him, "What in the hell are you tryin' to pull?" The hooded figure said nothing; going so far as to completely ignore her, looking only at his captor.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	Akhet noticed it all, grinning at the girl (as well as passing a wink her way), before turning back to the hooded figure, brandishing some ice blades the size of small knives. "If your life's important, you best answer the cute lass." he quipped, "otherwise blood may just turn to ice within the next 38½ seconds." He was not talking about bloodbending, as he lacked such capabilities, but he did know how to slit a throat pretty deftly--and he did conveniently leave that part open for him to do so. "See anything he might have stolen...?" he asked the curly-haired girl. "well... through the ice anyways."

Minali Otoyome	While she had been close to stomping her foot in anger, she had to admit that he was handling the situation far better than she could. Taking a deep breath, letting it out in a sigh, Minali tried to see if she recognized anything as coming from her workroom. After a moment, she was forced to shake her head, "Ah don' see anythin'... but if 'e got hold've a blueprint, 'e could be hidin' it just about anywhere." Now, she regretted not taking a look at her shop before running after him, but she hadn't exactly had time. Many of the things she worked on - from mechanisms to the aforementioned blueprints - could be slipped into his boot, or shirt, or just about anywhere. Still, the stranger was silent, but rather than the petulant silence that had reigned previously, this was a worried silence, evident by his eyes flicking between the two young people. This close, it was evident that he was, in fact, a small male, rather than a female. Perhaps he thought the boy was bluffing, for he only tried to move his shoulders, pulling futility at the ice.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	The Tallarico Clan were known for a variety of things, including their dangerousness, cunning, good looks, and sharp wits. Also among these was a calm demeanor. Akhet was sounding like he did this on an everyday basis. perhaps he did? "So kid... I'll ask you one more time? Did you take anything from the workshop of this beautiful young lady? How could you bring distraught emotions to such a fine woman? you should be ashamed of yourself..." and then suddenly his tone changed, bringing the knife closer again. "So you best start talking." he whispered with a smirk.

	At this point, since he hadn't managed to make the intended hand-off, the thief apparently decided that talking and going to prison would be a better option than dying and being relieved of the stolen goods, anyway. "Alright, alright!" He groaned, still trying to move around a little, "I look the load of blueprints! They're in my tunic, I swear!" Still looking between the both of them, the boy cursed. "This job went to shit as soon as it started..." He muttered, thinking that it wouldn't be audible; clearly he is not a master criminal.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	Unfreezing everything but his legs, he smirked again. "atta boy. turns out I was wrong about kids these days being ALL stupid. now... you best be turning those over to me right about now if you want to be on your way. And don't try anything funny just because your hands are free. we already know how that will end up... don't we?" after recieving them, Akhet released the water from around the kid's legs, essentially allowing him to run free. He was not necessarily an agent of the law, but felt that the kid had gotten justice--way more than he could have handled. "so..." he turned to the girl, "who do I owe this fine pleasure?" he grinned, approaching her with the blueprints, which he had not even looked at. "You may thank Akhet Sumatra Tallarico, who is humbly at your service." he bowed, although it was hard to tell where he was going with it. he stood back up, offering her the blueprints and waiting to hear her name.

Minali Otoyome	As predicted, the boy broke out in a run as soon as he was free, though he didn't try anything else; it was simply to get away. The theft had failed, after all, and he had been given a chance to avoid ending up in the stocks for his crimes. It was like wild dogs were nipping at his heels. Minali was impressed, despite her earlier irritation, by the way Akhet had handled the problem. With a slight smile, she reaches out, silently asking for the return of her blueprints. "Thank ya, Akhet Sumatra Tallarico," She told him with a small amount of cheek, trying to keep her accent withdrawn as she said his name; 'Ach-het Sumatr'uh Tallar-ehco' was a bit unflattering, after all, so she did her best. "M'Minali Oyotome," She gives her name, holding out her left arm for a shake, keeping the machine-laden right arm at her side. Now that the adrenaline is wearing off, she's starting to feel the sting of her injuries.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	"A pleasure." he smiled, "glad you weren't able to lose your work to something that trivial." he nodded approvingly. his voice had a smooth and oddly relaxing drawl to it--the kind of voice that would excel greatly at singing a soothing lullaby. "I like your accent, by the way." he grinned, knowing that she was trying to hide it (for it had come out when she was cursing at the predicament she had been in), "fits you quite well. Nice and cute." he chuckled. His voice could have fit him rather well too--smooth and collected. That was Akhet's demeanor, a confident smirk always on his face, and a cool sense of calm that did not seem easy to break.

Minali Otoyome	His obvious flirting brought a slight hint of pinkness to her cheeks, though Minali would never admit it. "Yer th'one with th'accent," She argues, pouting just slightly; it was the same argument she always made, although the philosophy behind it was never understood by anyone else. "...Thank ya, though, fer serious," She mentions, a little awkwardly, shifting her weight from one foot to the other, "S'much as Ah hate t'say it, ain't no way Ah could'a caught 'im, m'self." Minali averted her eyes, then - swallowing her pride was difficult, for her.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	Incidentally, a lot of people with "normal" accents told him the same thing. The Tallarico family did have something of an accent of their own, but Akhet lived up to it. "That I do." he smiled. "and I wear it with pride... it's one of my charms." he chuckled. "you should too... it's really cute." as she thanked him, he smiled back at her, and this was more of a sincere one than his plucky smirks he had been doing. "glad I could help." he shrugged, grinning, "I mean sure it's easier to help someone cute, but even if you weren't cute I probably still would have seen what I could do." Deciding not to leave the poor girl with such pink cheeks, he switched the subject just a little, to allow her to dwell on what he said in the meantime. "So... what is that thing on your arm? it looks... cumbersome, for the lack of a better word?"

Minali Otoyome	If he was hoping for her to keep considering his implications, he would have been sorely disappointed; once he asked Minali about her beloved machine, all other thoughts were driven from her head, in favor of mechanics. "S' mah Terratic Projectile an' Displacement Prosthetic Arm!" She gushed, using the same tone that other girls might use when talking about their purse-dogs, "Ah improved m'dad's design 'n made 'er m'own!" She went on, but it would likely go over anyone's head as she chattered on about coils and folded steel frames and tension ratios... Finally, she stopped for a breath, looking up at him, and reeled her delighted expression in quickly. "Ah'm sorry - m'told it's borin', when Ah talk about this kinda stuff," She murmured, reaching over to touch her prosthetic limb, as if for comfort.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	One of the reasons that Akhet's cunning was considered dangerous was because of his ability to make up plans on the fly. When one approach failed, her instantly shifted gears and worked on another one. He heard her out, understanding next to nothing about what she was rambling about, but he listened to her anyways. "everyone's got their passions, their hobbies... things they love. To each their own. I see nothing wrong with you enjoying what you do. What other way is there to live life?" "Call it little more than a curious man's question if you like, or look too deeply into it and see something that is not there... but does it cover your arm because of some defect, perhaps, or is it simply worn that way? Do not take what I say the wrong way... it is little more than a curious inquiry." He really just wanted to know if there was anything wrong with her right arm or not. He did seem interested, and she would notice that his eyes, while occasionally appearing to check her curvy body out, were mostly focused on either her hair, or more often than that even, the unusual contraption that was dominating her arm.

Minali Otoyome	"Well, m'dad made it so it'd only cover up t'here," She indicated from her fingers up to her elbow, "But Ah found 'at, if Ah made it fer th'whole arm," She then gestures up to her shoulder, where the machine starts, "Ah got a lot more control... 'n when Ah swing it, th'centrifugal force helps a hell'ova lot." Then, Minali seems to realize that she hadn't mentioned what the machine was for. "M'dad an' Ah made it t'do earthbendin' fer us, since we ain't able to." Ironically, the one part of her ramblings that deserves elaboration is the one part that she doesn't elaborate on.

Akhet Sumatra Tallarico	"Ah." he nodded calmly. "Well..." he replied after hearing the explanation as to what it was for, "that suddenly makes a whole lot of sense then. There's nothing wrong with not being a bender anyways." This was not just ass-kissing or brown-nosing. Akhet knew plenty of nonbenders and had plenty of friends who were such. They got along just fine, and so not having bending was certainly not a disability or anything. "'sides..." he couldn't help but add again. "the world's full of cute non-benders... you being one of them." he chuckled. He liked seeing that little blush of hers that formed when he complimented her. He was being sincere though. He wanted to pick her up and squeeze her, even though she was only 3 inches shorter than he was.

Minali Otoyome	While it did make her blush, it also brought back the determination. "Well, 'a course it don' matter if Ah can bend 're not," Minali agreed readily, "Th'point is that Ah can do it, so Ah'm gonna do it. T'prove Ah can." She does, however, reach up and start fiddling with the buckles, slowly loosening the machine's grip on her arm. A moment later, she slides it off and tries to lift it up to her shoulder... only to end up setting it down on the ground, a look of shock alighting on her face. "Aww, shit..." She mutters, moving down to her knees as she lowers her device, "M'sore as all get-out, now." It all comes back to her; being thrown through a wall, running through the city, keeping the machine on her arm for that long - it's taken its toll on her body.
