A commotion was heard near the higher-ups district of the Capital. The yells of the crowd muffled by the booming power of a normally small voice crying out, “Mommy!” As the crowd gathered around, an old man, a middle aged woman, and a silent man in a dark cloak were the first on the scene and tried to comfort the girl as they waited for authorities to arrive but she would not un-cling her tiny hands from her dead mother’s dress, her face buried in her chest. The alleyway was dark, but the writing on the wall was seen clear as day. A message in blood, a face nailed to the wall underneath the writing, “Another face for the Great Spirit, another step to balance. We are at your doorsteps. We have seen you here; we know you’ll see this, Great Bridge.”

Tarek Raiden

Tarek sighed as he arrived at the scene of the murder and saw the large crowds that had already gathered around to get a closer look. It wasn’t the first murder of its kind in the Fire Nation Capital, and though the city guard usually dealt with these sorts of occurrences, Tarek was eventually called in due to the brutal nature of the crimes and the fact that the murders were becoming more frequent.

“General Raiden!” called out the guard captain as he quickly made his way to Tarek, “thank the spirits you’re here!” he said in a relieved voice before explaining to Tarek the details of the crime. “What are your orders sir?” he ended off with, looking up at Tarek expectantly.

“Form a perimeter! No one leaves the scene until they have been questioned, and keep them away from the body!” he said as he pushed his way through the crowds. He eventually made it to the actual scene, which had been cordoned off so that the crowds wouldn’t try and interfere. Tarek stopped dead in his tracks as he beheld the sight that lay before him: A woman lay motionless on the ground, in a pool of blood. Her face, brutality cut-off and crudely nailed to a wall. Worst of all, a little girl sat clenching the woman’s dress, crying uncontrollably.

Words could not describe how Tarek felt at the moment, he was angry, shocked, appalled, disturbed, unbelieving even. “What monster would do this?” he thought to himself as he looked down at the traumatized little girl. His heart bled for her. Carefully, Tarek stepped towards her and scooped her up. She kicked and screamed frantically despite his best efforts to calm her down. He eventually managed to pull her away and handed her over to one of the female guards. “Get her cleaned up and give her some food… then we will try and find the father,” he whispered sadly.

Tarek turned back to the dead woman with new resolve and determination. Whoever had performed this heinous atrocity had made a new enemy that day, in the form of Tarek Raiden. He crouched over to examine the corpse and carefully read the message painted in blood. “Another face for the Great Spirit, another step to balance. We are at your doorsteps. We have seen you here; we know you’ll see this, Great Bridge.” He read out to himself before pausing. “Great bridge? Is this about Avatar Zulera?” he thought to himself.
After a while reflecting on the words of the message, he tore himself away and began looking for other clues.

Zulera Joanna Tallarico

Back in the Fire Nation Capital again. There never seemed to be a dull moment here. Why things were this way... she would never know. still... her eshe was, and during her random walks through the city that she would often fearlessly make... something new caught her eye.

a scene, but not just any scene. a murder scene, and not just any murder scene. this was one of the grizzlier things in life that Zulera had seen, as she sort of pushed and shoved her way till she could get a good view of what had happened.
her face twisted into a look of disgust. why someone needed to be so gory when they killed someone was beyond Zulera. she liked to solve things swiftly and efficiently. whatever message was behind this was probably an eye-roller at best.

The child kicked and screamed and tried to bite the man to get free, only managing to get one arm out of the hold but seemed to give up resisting the near-perfect grip. She looked over at the man inspecting the body, reaching for him. There were mutterings heard throughout the scene. It seemed that the perimeter was tough to secure, word of mouth spread fast and many people came to fulfill a macabre curiosity. The old man, one of the first on the scene was belligerent. “God, what’s this world coming to? I can barely remember the time when it was safe to walk around here. What happened to all the guards that are supposed to be looking after us? “he took a deep breath for a moment tried to calm down.

“But even worse is that damn Avatar, I remember when my dad told me stories of REAL Avatars, people who could find power even in the hardship of helping others. If she did her job right, we wouldn't have this happening! Mothers’ torn from children, disgusting.”

Less vocal was the middle-aged woman talking to an officer. “Can you at least let me leave to pick up my son? Or at least send someone to call my husband to do it?” she said quietly.

The man in the cloak did and said nothing and waited to leave. He sat down, propped himself against a wall, and pulled out a deck of cards playing what seemed to be a form of solitaire. He seemed fairly collected as he matched up the suits together.

Tarek Raiden

Tarek turned his attention to the three people who were the first to arrive: An old man, a middle-aged woman and a man with a dark cloak. Maybe one of these people had seen something, or knew more. The city guard knew procedure well, and kept them aside until they had been questioned. “I am sorry, but you three aren’t going anywhere until the General says so,” said one of the guards to the three people as Tarek activated his heat sense to be better able to detect lies and got ready to begin questioning them.

Tarek addressed the old man first; he appeared to be quite disgusted at what had happened, complaining quite a bit about the guard not fulfilling their duties and complaining even more about how it was all the Avatar’s fault. Tarek took special notice of how he spoke against the Avatar. It sounded as if he resented her, and was angry at her. It may have meant nothing, but right now Tarek looked at things objectively and he saw that this man didn’t like the Avatar, a trait common with whoever murdered the young mother.

Tarek had the guards escort the man to him and gave him a polite bow in greeting. “I have a few questions to ask you about what happened.” Tarek started, watching the man carefully. “First I need to know what happened, did you see anything or remember anything?” he asked. “I also want to know what made you assume this was the Avatar’s fault?” he asked, hoping to see how the man reacted. In fact Tarek was very curious, because Avatar Zulera was not explicitly mentioned in the note, and few people knew enough to connect her with “the great bridge”. Perhaps the old man simply figured it out, like Tarek had, or perhaps he was hiding something.

Next was the middle-aged woman. She seemed adamant to leave the crime scene and go pick up her son. She did request that if she could not be released yet, that they send someone else to let her husband know so that he could pick up her son instead. The situation was serious however, and whether she was lying or telling the truth, Tarek wasn’t going to let her go anywhere.

“I am sorry, but I am going to have to detain you for a while longer…this is a serious crime…someone has just separated that child from her mother forever, so as a mother yourself, I am sure you will understand my need to keep you here and ask you a few questions.” He said as he examined the woman, studying her face for any signs of a reaction. “I need to know what happened, whatever details you can remember?” he asked her.

Last was the man in the dark cloak who was sitting quietly playing a card game. Tarek wasn’t sure what to make of the man yet, apart for the fact that he seemed quite calm about everything, which was unusual for someone who had seen such a gruesome crime first hand. “I need to know what you saw,” He said bluntly to the man. He was curious to see what the man would say, and how the three individuals’ stories would correspond with each other. He had to find who had done this.

Zulera Joanna Tallarico

Zulera was lingering around the area, noticing a few people get questioned here and there. she heard her name come up, as if it was her fault. It did not faze her, however. Instead, she continued to wander around, almost purposely trying to be seen by the witnesses being questioned, particularly those who had mentioned or blamed her. She did not say anything, but was ready to pull out a snappy comeback or reply if she needed to. otherwise, there was no way anyone would hear the pitter patter of her bare feet against the ground with the noise surrounding them. Her gloved hands were in her pockets, and a few stray bangs hung in her face.
