Nokomi

Nokomi looked down upon the happy farming town of Makapu village, weary and exhausted. She had been looking for the poison vendor she'd heard about in a pub back in the Fire Nation, and had traveled a long way to find this "Zehir". Those who knew of her said that while Zehir didn't seem like much, her poisons were useful and she collected the venom herself. Not many had knowledge of her whereabouts and so tracking her down had been a tedious job, but Noko was confident that here was where Zehir resided for the moment.

This was just what Nokomi needed; quality poisons that worked easily and quickly. Her methods of assassination were becoming more easily recognized; her trademark custom made arrows, poisons, and arm-whips were all instantly known to be something of her own.

She was wanted in many places at this point; her usual blue hair was now an orangish-red, and her clothes were very Air Nation-esque to hide her true nationality.

But Noko wasn't one to get caught.

Taking a long drink from her waterskin, she began to traipse down the hills towards the center of the town to find the small-known and infamous Zehir.

Zehir

Zehir's gaunt face told her latest story.  It felt like days since she'd eaten, and she'd gotten to the point where she was willing to look passed her anxiety in order to get food.  While she normally did not sell her wares, she had to make money somehow.  Her poisons were rather expensive, and she could usually get by selling a couple every month.  Of course, the worst part about being a poison vendor was how horribly scary her normal customers were.  She always kept a poisoned knife tucked away in case of trouble, but Zehir couldn't help being terrified most of the time.  She waited as the alleyway darkened.

Her stomach growled. She could normally hunt her own food, but she'd been having terrible luck lately. Finding animals, even snakes, was becoming very difficult, and snake meat wasn't exactly filling. She pondered her latest failures and wondered what was keeping her down. Hopefully some unsavory sort would come by soon and buy some of her poisons.

She had decided against displaying her wares, as she would not be surprised if a robbery were to take place.  She had to rely on her word of mouth reputation, which was actually pretty good.  She was known throughout the criminal world for her poisons, and she couldn't say she wasn't proud.  She lazily flipped a knife around while she waited.

Nokomi

Noko walked out of what she supsected was the only bar in all of Makapu, dusting off her hands while shouting still ensued from within. She frowned slightly, as she would've loved to stay and finish off the fight, but she got her information and after asking one of the locals, was on her way.

Sunset was fast approaching and Nokomi was absolutely exhausted and wanted to get what she needed, sleep, and get out. Finding her landmark, she turned into the alleyway next to it, moving quietly and nocking an arrow into her bow. She didn't really know what to expect; from what she'd heard, Zehir didn't like to talk and kept meetings short.

She almost called out a simple greeting, but a flash in the dimming light caught her eye. Then another. And another. Eventually she made out the shape of a girl, flipping a knife about. The sun kept catching the edge of the blade. Noko narrowed her eyes, keeping her bow at the ready, and stayed her distance.

"Are you Zehir, the poison vendor of Ba Sing Se?" She asked. No time for introductions; she kept these things simple and sweet. Nokomi was tired as well, and so she was more tense than usual.

Zehir

Zehir almost sighed with relief.  While the woman wandering down the alley towards her did have a bow at the ready, she wasn't nearly as scary in appearance as Zehir was used to.  Her reddish-orange hair and air nomad clothes didn't really look deadly.  The woman got into business quickly, "Are you Zehir, the poison vendor of Ba Sing Se?" Zehir nodded.  She'd stopped twirling the knife by now, and she set it down on a nearby crate.  "What are you looking for?" Zehir inquired.  Zehir began rummaging through her backpack, pulling out vial after vial.  She'd been collecting poison for a very long time.  Zehir still ran the risk of this woman being a thief, but she did have to at least show off the poisons she had.  Plus, Zehir could always throw her knife with deadly aim.  An overwhelming amount of vials were now lying on a dusty crate, a variety of colors could be seen, but Zehir could tell all of them apart.  She was sure this woman knew a couple of poisons herself, but Zehir was also sure she wouldn't know them all.  Zehir's hands were shaking, but she knew there was no way to stop this.  "If you don't know what you're looking for by name, you could t-tell me the desired effect..."

Nokomi

"What are you looking for?" was the response Nokomi got. Noko didn't answer, thinking about it. Her eyes adjusted and she watched as Zehir began emptying her backpack and pulling out different poisons; why, this infamous poison seller was no more than a girl! From the looks of it, her young teens?

Noko relaxed her bow and slung it over her shoulder, returning the arrow to its quiver. While not unarmed and would definitely not be taken by surprise, she felt no need to be glaring at this girl down an arrow shaft. Her hands were shaking and Nokomi almost felt bad.

"If you don't know what you're looking for by name, you could t-tell me the desired effect..." Zehir said and Noko shrugged, noting the slight stutter and decided to try a nicer approach. Obviously this girl wasn't a threat as long as Noko didn't try any funny business--which she wasn't going to. She was far too exhausted for that.

"I'm not gonna hurt you ya know. And maybe one for paralysis, another for instant death....for good luck, perhaps a third for inflicting excruciating pain?"

Zehir

Zehir quickly realized that this woman didn't have a specific job in mind.  She was just preparing for the future.  Maybe she was a mercenary of some sort.  Most people who bought poison knew exactly what they wanted to do with it.  Zehir didn't mind though, three poisons would cost quite a bit of money.  "For paralysis, I have these," Zehir practically whispered as she took a dark brown and a black poison from the pile. "This one lasts longer..." she said as she waved the black vial.  It was venom from the Rawskin Swamp Snake.  They'd poison their prey, which would eventually die by drowning in the swampy murk.  It was an indirect way to hunt, but it worked.  "It's fifty silver p-pieces...the other one is twenty...  She set these down, closer to the woman so that she could study them if she wished to.

She picked up five more vials.  They were a variety of colors, but the one she showed the woman was a saturated purple.  "These will all kill someone eventually, but this one is the most reliable.  The quickest too..."  It came from the Mountain Coil Snake, one of Zehir's favorite to hunt.  It was very, very dangerous however.  "100 silver...the rest are all cheaper..."  She once again sat these down closer to the woman.

"Finally, for torture, Sandstone Snake venom..."  It was a sickly, off-white.  The vial was larger than the rest.  "It won't ever kill, but it'll will burn.  You can use more for...more p-pain."  She sat this final vial down.  "That one's sixty silver."  She studied the woman, waiting for her response.

Nokomi

Nokomi was instantly impressed with what Zehir had brought to the table--she was also not interested in getting swindled, either. "I'll take the black one for fifty, the purple for one hundred, and the white for sixty. Under one condition: you allow me a test run of each." She said, thinking quickly.

"I'll pay you half of the total two hundred and ten for your trouble now and you'll give me just enough of each to coat my arrow heads. And you'll stick around town until I'm done testing them; come with me or go wherever, your choice. Just stay in Makapu. If I'm satisfied, I'll pay you the rest. If not, you haven't really lost much."

Noko was extremely picky about what she used to kill her victims; paying to test it, even if it was a little pricey, was worth it to her. All she had to do was find some poor sap whom no one would notice was gone until after they skipped town.

Zehir

Zehir blinked her eyes in quickly. She wasn't prepared for the woman's request, and she just nodded as she explained it. The worst that could happen was Zehir getting half the price of a vial for an arrow-head of poison. Which wasn't a loss at all, it was a gain. She was mostly startled by how non-chalantly this woman was going to presumably kill or maim three people. Zehir quickly added, "I'll wait here..." because she didn't actually want to go with the woman. But Zehir would be sure to stalk her. Zehir was sure her poisons worked, but it would be interesting to see them in action again.

She handed the three vials to the woman, so she could coat her arrows in them. Zehir wasn't sure what to think of her yet. She wondered if her sneaking skills were what they used to be, but Zehir did have a dark hood in her bag, so she wouldn't be instantly noticeable. Even if she was caught, it wouldn't be so bad.

Nokomi

Nokomi nodded to Zehir's decision to wait in the alley, and dug through her pack until finding her purse, opening it and counting out one hundred and five silver pieces. She set the money on Zehir's crate, put the purse away, and removed her quiver from her back, setting it on the ground and kneeling. She selected her six finest arrows, two to coat in each poison, in case the first one missed. She highly doubted it, but it was always good to have a buffer.

She dipped the tips quickly, handing the vials back to Zehir as soon as she was done. "Thanks."

Zehir

Zehir stood there awkwardly while the woman coated her arrows in poison. She had put the money away quickly, and the long pause afterwards made her feel really odd. She would watch the woman coat her arrows then quickly look away in case the woman noticed her watching. It was an awkward dance between curiosity and anxiety. Zehir rubbed her elbow. It was one of her many mannerisms, and she continued to flick her eyes between the brick wall and the woman. When the woman was done, Zehir set the vials back on the crate, and began to anticipate the woman's departure.

Nokomi

Nokomi watched Zehir's eyes dance between the wall and herself, and smiled ever so slightly. "I'll be back later," she said with a nod of her head, and a slight awkward wave.

***

Noko sat in a tree, watching the night life of Makapu curiously. The people traveled in friendly groups, going from one to the other towards their destinations; the locals seemed to all know one another and the atmosphere of this little village was very cheerful. Noko continued her watch, finally finding a man walking alone. Others attempted to converse with him, their lanterns lighting him for a few moments until finally they wandered away as he proved unresponsive.

Nokomi moved through the trees, following the man. Eventually he reached the outskirts of the village, and continued heading towards the mountains. He occasionally mumbled a few things here or there and continuously looked over his shoulder as though expecting to be attacked at any moment. The lights of Makapu were rapidly receding in the distance and Noko wondered just where he was going.

Her curiosity kept his fate at bay.
