Kairi Inoue

Kairi stared down at the various types of fruit in the fruit stand, trying her best to ignore the constant rumbling and growling of her stomach. Papaya's, apples, mango's, cherries, moon peaches... none of which she could afford. But if she just got through this day and sell some of the fruit, she might just be able to buy enough of it to feed herself properly for once. Things weren't going very well for her lately. People around these parts of town were often too poor to take care of themselves, let alone hire other people. She understood that, and wouldn't want to make someone else's life harder because of her.

This was a good job though. Well, it wasn't fun or anything, but it was calm and legal. That's all Kairi wanted from a job, really. All those borderline illegal jobs she'd had made her nervous. She might not just get away with it anymore. She knew the owner of the shop, and had worked for him several times before. He wasn't a very compassionate man, but he trusted her to do the job, and rightfully so. The one downside of working at a fruit stand was... the fruit. Gosh she was hungry.

Maybe she could just take one of those lychee nuts? They were tiny, nobody would notice... Fortunately, a customer came to buy some apples, quickly driving that thought away, even after the customer was gone. She rubbed the temples of her eyes, though she was used to sleep deprivation, and shifted her weight to her other leg. She would kill for a chair.

Bao-Yu Huang

Bao-Yu was walking along the many streets of the city. Her mother was not at home, she said something about having tea with her friends. Staying home seemed to be an incredibly boring option for Bao-Yu, so she decided to leave.
She has been wandering around for hours now, followed by her cat, but she could not find anything more exciting than some stray animals fighting in an alley.
Sighing, she looked around. She was now in the lower ring of the city, all around her she could see poor people. Finally she spotted a girl selling fruits. The fruits looked very sweet, they seemed to ask her to take some of them.
Hands behind her back, smiling happily, she started walking towards the girl casually. She planned on snatching some fruits, then running away quickly, as soon as she got there.
As she was getting closer and closer to the colourful fruits, she started picking up speed. By the time she was three meters from the girl, she was running with her full speed.

Kairi Inoue

It wasn't exactly busy at the fruit stand, but Kairi was pretty sure that at this rate, she would have sold a decent amount at the end of the day. Which could mean a decent meal. She was looking forward to the end of the seemingly uneventful day, with just the that one meal to look forward to. Only a few more hours, she had enough patience to get through those.

She was even thinking of saving up some money, a thought that had been pushed aside for a while. She didn't want it for new clothes or even an apartment. No, she wanted knowledge. Her dad had taught her how to read properly, and the one thing she really wanted to buy was a book. Or a scroll maybe. Something with stories, history, or waterbending moves. It might not be an impossible dream; buying a house, however, certainly was. But she might just be able to afford a book in a few months.

The thought made her smile gently, not as focused on her hunger as she'd been before. She suddenly noticed a girl walking, and then running towards her, or towards the fruit stand. She narrowed her eyes, unsure of the girl's intentions. Perhaps she just didn't like to walk slowly, perhaps she needed Kairi's help. Despite those possibilities, she opened her water satchel with one thumb. Just in case. She wouldn't do anything without thinking it through and being sure about the situation, though. But this girl's intention might be doing what Kairi had been considering a few minutes ago. And she couldn't let that happen.

Bao-Yu Huang

Bao-Yu smiled widely at the thought of winning a juicy fruit for herself. Especially that this time she wouldn't "win" it against some slow old woman. This way there was way more challenge in it for her. But even so, she was sure that she will win in the end. She was thought that the girl selling the fruits was probably a non-bender. Or she could be an earthbender. If she was a non-bender, she wouldn't have a chance at catching her, unless she was really fast. If she was an earthbender, the same thing applies, with maybe a little more excitement. Earthbending is slow, she might be able to dodge most of the attacks.
She was now only a few steps from victory. Only then did she notice that the other girl was looking at her. But that was natural, who wouldn't look at a kid running straight towards them?
Suddenly, a thought crossed her mind. Wouldn't it be a bad thing to steal from someone who was living in this part of the town? But she just shrugged it off. Maybe the girl wasn't even living here... And if really needed, her mother was always there to pay the price of the stolen fruit to the girl. Well, if her mother finds out about this little adventure...
She reached out for a fruit just as soon as she was close enough to snatch one. She focused on the mango right in front of her, ready to turn and run away as soon as she got it.

Kairi Inoue

Kairi kept a close eye on the young girl, seeing her approach really quickly. Soon, her suspicions were confirmed to be true; this kid came here to steal some of the fruit. Her mind was racing and an odd feeling of nostalgia flooded her. Except for the fact that the roles were reversed this time. When she'd just started living on the streets, she had been desperate. So much so, that she resorted to stealing. She hadn't done it often, but she felt guilty about every single time she'd done it.

Still, she couldn't treat the girl harshly. Partly just because she wasn't that type of person, and partly because this situation felt so eerily familiar. Once she'd decided, her movements were swift and without hesitation. No way was she losing the one stable job she had.

She quickly bended the water -which wasn't much- out of her satchel, using it to soak the girl in a matter of seconds. She hoped the element of surprise would be on her side, and that she could take the mango back immediately. She stopped for a second, not wanting to leave the stand unattended. Then she jumped over the bags of fruit anyway, focused entirely on getting the stolen fruit back.

Bao-Yu Huang

Bao-Yu froze for a second when she suddenly found herself soaked in water. For a moment she looked at the girl, surprised to discover that she was a waterbender. Well, Bao-Yu did not expect that. She started running again, as she saw the girl jump over the bags of fruit. She was not so sure about being the victorious one in the end anymore. She ran as fast as she could, with the mango in her hand. She found a narrow street nearby, and she decided to run towards it. If only she could make it there, she might be able to loose the girl.
She accidentally ran into a man, but she didn't even say "Sorry" fro bumping into him. She just ran on.
While dodging the people on the streets, and turning her head back now and then to see how close the other girl was, she noticed, that her cat was no longer with her. She slowed down for a moment, considering turning back for her pet, but instead choose to go back later. She sped up again, but she was slowly starting to think about giving up. The girl chasing her was about 6-7 years older, and probably faster. But she still kept up her pace, and concentrated on that one street she wanted to reach.

Kairi Inoue

Kairi found herself being really torn up about leaving the stand. But now that the girl had gotten away, still holding the mango, she had to make a quick decision. Every second she waited, the girl got further away. Normally she always thought about things for a long time before doing or saying something. But there was no time to hesitate, no time to think this through.

She began running after the girl, focusing on her goal for now rather than hypothetical consequences. She darted through the crowd, finding her evasive style of fighting to come in really handy. She was quick and agile, and flexibly avoided bumping into other people. It was more like she was doing some sort of evasive dance move, ducking, leaping and dodging.

She was quickly closing in. What she was missing though, was water. She'd used all of the water in her satchel already, and unfortunately it wasn't raining. But she was familiar around these streets and houses, and it had actually rained not too long ago. She knew most of these houses had a roof gutter to catch the rain water in. She managed to spot a low one, and quickly bended the water out of it, careful not to lose it on any of the people.

Her eyes darted around, and for a split second she was afraid she'd lost the kid. But luckily she saw her, not too far away. She ran after her at full speed, and when she got close enough, turned the water into ice, freezing one of the girl's arms to a wall.

Bao-Yu Huang

Bao-Yu was about to reach the narrow street. Her confidence came back, she was sure that reaching that street would help her somehow. It was an illogical thought, but seemed somehow true to Bao-Yu. As she was only a step away, she was suddenly stopped by something. That something was very cold, and it caught her had. She turned her head to see what it was. Her hand was frozen to a wall.

She tried to pull her arm out of the ice, but she wasn't strong enough. the girl chasing her was getting closer every second. Bao-Yu made a little fire in her free hand to melt the ice around her other, but just before the flame's warmth could reach it, she made it vanish. She did not want to burn herself accidentally, and she knew she couldn't control fire too well, if something startled her, it could grow too big. She'd rather accept defeat than hurt herself.

She tried to convince herself that she was in no trouble, that her mother will help, and solve the problem. But the girl was a bender probably much stronger than Bao-Yu. She just hoped that the girl wasn't an aggressive kind of person.

Kairi Inoue

Kairi was surprised to see the girl could firebend. There weren't that many firebenders here. Then again, there weren't that many waterbenders here either. For a brief moment she was afraid the girl would just melt the ice and get away again. Then she wouldn't have known what to do to catch her, at least not without hurting her. But luckily that's not what happened. It looked like that was the girl's plan at first, but she backtracked soon after she made a flame, and she now stood still.

Maybe she'd seen the error in her ways, maybe she was too young to control fire properly, maybe she just chose to accept her defeat. Whatever the reason, Kairi was glad this had put an end to the chase. She stopped right in front of the kid, pondering what to say first. ''Okay, just-'' she started, panting slightly and holding up her hand. ''Give it back. Please.''

But she no longer would be satisfied with just the mango. Her curiosity had been triggered, and she now wanted to know more about the girl and her motives. ''Who are you, anyway?'' Her tone was rather blank instead of angry or understanding, as she was still reserving judgment. ''And why are you stealing? Don't you have money or...'' with the next sentence her voice started to shake slightly. ''Anyone to take care of you?''

Bao-Yu Huang

Bao-Yu was standing there, thinking of what to do. She decided, that she will not tell the truth if the girl asks her why she tried stealing, what part of the city was she from or why she was on the streets. And she will not tell her name either, if the girl wants to know, she'll just lie. Lying was something she used as her plan B all the time. She was not a perfect liar, but she knew that she needed to put a little truth in a lie to make it sound realistic, and she knew she had to say what people wanted to hear. The problem was, this time she wasn't sure what the girl wanted to hear. She didn't even know what questions the girl will ask.

The girl stopped right in front of Bao-Yu, and asked her to give the mango back. Bao-Yu was about to hand it over, glad that the girl did not ask any questions, when she continued speaking. She asked Bao-Yu who she was, and why she was stealing. Well, it was time to lie. Bao-Yu thought about what to say, while trying to make a regretting expression. She didn't want to anger the girl too much. She wouldn't be able to win. She never fought a waterbender, and her skills weren't good enough to face someone more experienced than herself. She said the first name that popped into her mind: "I'm Min. Min Long" she said. "And I do have Mom and Dad to take care of me, I just stole because-" here she stopped for a barely noticeable second, then continued her sentence. "I don't have any money here with me, and I was starting to get hungry. I live very far from here."

She then looked down at the ground, and held the mango out for the girl to take. She really hoped that she sounded honest, and the girl wouldn't ask any more questions.

Kairi took the mango, unsure of what to say. She believed the girl, who'd introduced herself as Min, but she didn't approve of her reason to steal. ''I understand, but that's no excuse for stealing. Especially not around these parts of the city. People have it very rough here, and it's hard enough without others messing up our jobs.'' She'd reached the end of her ability to be strict, but she hoped she'd gotten through to the girl.

For now she was mostly worried about the fruit stand. What if other people had stolen stuff while she had been away? What if the owner had come back and seen that she had left the fruit unattended? She was bound to get in trouble about this somehow... She should have known Min was going to steal, she should have seen it coming. Maybe then she could have stopped her in time.

But she forced herself not to think the worst of it, and distractedly turned the ice around the girl's hand back into water, bending it into her satchel.

Bao-Yu Huang

Still looking at the ground, Bao-Yu said "I'm sorry." She did feel a little regret for what she did, but she was more annoyed than regretful. She wasn't used to be told what was right and what wasn't by people other than her parents. She was about to tell the waterbender that she hated when people told her what to do and what not to do, but she kept it to herself. She had caused enough trouble to this girl, there was no need to make her angry. She was lucky that the girl did not hurt her for stealing. She made a mental note that she should be more cautious next time. Maybe steal from old ladies and old men only.

When the girl removed the ice from her arm, she sighed, taking it as a sign that there was no more scolding or questions to come. She said "Let's go!" to her cat, only to see that he was still not by her side. Great, this was two more things to worry about. One of them was that now this girl probably thinks she is crazy, talking to no one. The other was that the cat could be lost. At the moment, only the latter was on Bao-Yu's mind. That cat was her most loyal friend, maybe the only living being she actually cared for other than her parents. She looked around, hoping to find the cat somewhere nearby, but he was nowhere to be seen. Ignoring the girl, Bao-Yu started walking hurriedly back towards the fruit stand.
