Commander Star

One week prior to Star and Talkato's departure to the Northern Water Tribe.

As Star searched through papers given to her by her assistant, she came across something interesting: A worn paper showing a man apparently named Lee Hakota-Zai. She asked her knowledgable connections about the man and found out he is extremely skilled, mostly with his blades and his ability to temporarily stop bending. She ordered for this man to be located. Once the whereabouts of Hakota-Zai were discovered, she immediately set out to see him.

While in a tea shop, she saw the man outside. Her and her assistant followed him until they came to a sort of private area. She aproached.

"Excuse me, sir. I'm Commander Star." she said as she gestured somehow with the metal insignia on her chest. "I know about your skills, and if you come with me back to my quarters, I can reward you dearly!"

She said this with her pleasant, happy tone. She smiled at the man waiting for a reply.

Zulera Joanna Tallarico

The walk through Ba Sing Se had been pretty quiet and mostly eventless, as most excursions with Zai were. it wasn't that the two disliked speaking to each other, but rather that they found solace in the silence. Unlike some earlier incidents, this moment was unlikely to turn intimate; it was just a reuniting of old friends after a while. their exact feelings for each other still slightly unclear.

it was only interrupted when they were approached by a strange woman, almost as if out of nowhere. she gave a formal introduction, and Qulera quickly (and obviously) deducted that she was after Zai. after all, that part was pretty hard to miss.

"skills," she raised an eyebrow, "quarters..."
what a lovely combination.
"seems a bit intimate, no?" she quipped, "or is this less of a personal matter and more of a political or national affair?"

it piqued her interest, mostly because she was curious to know what she wanted from Zai. it might have been something to do with the war. while Zulera was mostly disinterested in it, wars were always interesting adventures, and Zulera was admittedly curious, as well as a slight bit interested.

Hakota-Zai

Back in Ba Sing Se, and still in the Earth Kingdom. For one who traveled so often, Zai seemed to be home alot. He counted his blessings that at least he was many leagues away from Kiyoshi. Only with great shame could the vagrant ever return. But that was the past, and Zai had found another tavern in which his tab was not quite maxed yet. It was here he noticed something interesting -a small detail most would miss- the poster of his was missing from the noticeboard. Strange indeed.

He downed his last drink, the barkeep not allowing the broke mercenary another drop; Hakota was no man to find trouble and he left the tavern in buzzed silence. Only on the fringe of drunk, he cursed under his alcohol-stained breath, ambling out the open door and choosing some odd, random direction in which to wander; there was little point in having a destination with the sun fast falling into dusk and not a coin to which the mercenary could find room. And still there was no work for the-- someone was following him... The revelation was slow to dawn upon Zai's mind in its drink-induced sluggishness.

He straightened his form, breathing deeply to compensate for the motor-inhibition. It was not something he favored, being followed, but those days were past. So, hugging his tattered cloak close to his Kiyoshi armor to fend off the coming cold of the night, he found himself a more private place away from the more common masses ever vigilant in Ba Sing Se. Before he could turn, a voice called out to him.

"Excuse me, sir. I'm Commander Star," she stated, making some odd motion with her chest to draw Zai's only eye to the Earth Kingdom insignia. Of course the male's mind also noted well the breasts upon which the insignia lay. This moment passed swiftly as she mentioned he knowledge of his skills. What was it, then? An assassination attempt? No, too direct... It'd have been easier for such a pretty girl to get him in a room without mentioning his skills and poison him. A challenge? No, she'd have opened up with that.... Hmm. Must be something needed of him. Either way, he'd play along.

"Hmm. Reward, eh? Usually they treat meh t' a drink afore invitin' me t' their bed," he replied in his soft, but presently slurred tone. Was he drunk? No, only buzzed. But if this did become life-threatening, he was always one to lead an opponent on that he was weaker than he truly was. "But fer a beauty as yerself, I'd be glad t'." He grinned as he motioned for her to lead on. While he was fairly sober, what of a buzz the usually heavy drinker had did slide in to let him forget present company.

Condition:Fit and Well.

Commander Star

Star noticed the woman who was with him. Maybe it was his girlfriend? Star's acting as a sweet and nonhostile individual usually leaves people uncautious. However this didn't seem to be the case with these two. She knew he must have been truely a good fighter. She examined him carefully and realized his look towards her breast. Her rich and professional life did not usually include behavior like this from anybody. However, she figured street rats like Zai would be dying for sex on a regular basis.

She turned around as her fine, expensive silk cape whirled around her. Her assistant motioned for Zai to follow.

"The beautiful girl can come too!" Star said as she was facing away from them. Six basic Earth Kingdom Soldiers surrounded them all, as it wasn't very safe for important military officers to be in the lower-class districts which were home to muggers and murderers.

--Assuming they follow, as we talked about in chat, transition to her quarters.-------

There they were. In the Capital building of Ba Sing Se. The very same building in which the revered Earth Queen Meili did her work. They entered Star's Quarters, a room decorated with expensive flowers and pure crystals. She sat at her large table, which had a map of the world draw onto it, as well as a smaller map of Ba Sing Se. There were plastic pieces on the maps. It looked like a board game of some sort. The pieces seemed to resemble soldiers of each of the four nations, as well of pieces sculpted of the nation leaders around the world.

The only ones who were permitted to enter her room were Zai, the girl with Zai, and Star.

"Lee Hakota-Zai. Master of blades and blocker of chi. In a week I depart to the Northern Water Tribe as a Representative along with Ambassador Talkato. I want a guard. Not just an ordinary guard. I am offering you an official position as Primacy Guard of me, Commander Star. Your job will be protecting me and making sure nobody touches me...hehe. Also to my understanding you are struggling with money? Accepting this full-time job will earn you enough money for you to consider yourself Highest-Class."

Zulera Joanna Tallarico

Zulera raised an eyebrow at the guards. Someone who was not an important political figure who needed guards or escorts was not exactly someone Zulera would think highly of. she was a woman who generally respected those who had proven their own skills and powers, as opposed to cowards who had to hide behind guards. she had to admit that Queen Meili had some gall to appear at times unguarded, despite the small handful of assassination attempts that had come up against her.
but, she was not here to make enemies or even rivals right now, and so she followed silently. the last time guards had been this close to her was when the Kyoshi Legion had captured her and brought her before Meili herself. this wasn't then though, and the situation hardly seemed hostile. thus, she followed in silence.

------

the memories of this building were still fresh on Zulera's mind, especially after "That" incident at the Northern Water Tribe which had reached Meili's ears. it had not been a necessarily pleasant conversation, but that too was past.

"so you're basically saying that you're unable to defend yourself?" Zulera quipped. Avatar or not, she wasn't exactly known for controlling her thoughts and/or when not to speak her mind, and thus, blurt-outs like this were fairly common. she kept her hands and feet in plain sight, however, because she wasn't about to pick a fight. there was a difference between stupidly brave and stupidly stupid. Zul was "stupidly brave" at best... a bit reckless, aye, but not stupid.
or perhaps this quip was more involved with her relationship to Zai himself.
"or perhaps I should just ask instead where that puts me." she mused aloud. "this is about the war, is it not?"
if it was, it might just be the kick she needed to get involved. if not... well, then it was lame. there was just no other way Zulera could see it. but, her curiosity had thrown her into many an adventure, and perhaps it was that time again where she would get tossed into the mix head-first.

Hakota-Zai

Zai did as motioned, stumbling along the ground in his false, but well-acted drunken stupor, glancing at Zulera's form then to Star's. He knew Zulera cared not for his wandering gaze, but at a point he tripped over a loose cobble and his shoes slipped right off. Fortunately some form of rough elastic materials kept them attached to the dirty Kiyoshi garbs, just off the ground. The act even sustained while soldiers surrounded them to escort the three to royal grounds.

-----------------------------------------------

It wasn't until the trio had entered the private room that Zai straightened, breathed deeply and began analyzing the room quietly, and calmly; his drunken guise entirely gone. He knew warboards well enough, even to the degree that he was familiar with the general meanings of the placements and pieces upon the board. He looked upon it closely for a moment before returning his gaze to Star, dead set to look her in the eyes with his own-- his stare now a fair bit serious to match his posture. But then again, Zai always took a job seriously, even if he might return to a laid-back disposition on the side.

Zulera did interject in the moment with that blatant burst of her own opinion that she often did tone into any situation. Something Zai admired despite his oft reticent nature. Though while Zulera made show that she was unarmed, it was quite obvious Zai was anything but-- with a blade on his back most notably, but also fans hidden within cloak and earthbending and the Secret Martial Art at his disposal he was never defenseless. He made no move, however, to assail anyone. He had no intention nor reason to, and asides, he was being offered a job. One that it seemed he wouldn't really be able to avoid. He was in a sea of debt, and while he favored vagrancy, it left him penniless and would only further his debt 'till he was in more trouble than when he killed for money.

"Well," he finally spoke up after Zulera fell silent, one of the fire nation's pieces in his fingers. He placed the piece in perfect position it had originally been placed, and looked back to Star. "Seems like an offer I can't refuse. Keeping hands off a ranking officer is easy coin for so little work... Is there a catch I am missing, Commander?" He glanced to Zulera briefly. "And where would this put Zulera. I find she's... A good companion, for combat or company." It could have been easy to see innuendo in Zai's words, but the stern and objective tone defied this humor. It was only a matter of time before his past caught him again. He'd always accepted this.

But he wanted to make sure this was a path to later liberate him of such woes of the past, instead of deepen them.

Mood:Buzzed, but Sober and Serious.
Condition:Fit and Well.

Commander Star

Playing with the piece of the Northern Chief, she listened to the confident words of Zai. She knew well enough he had the skills to protect her.

To Zai, she replied "No catch. You simply keep me protected with your life and obey my command. Of course I realize you are a mercenary, however this position will require an official contract between us. I have already had it written.". She slid a scroll of parchment towards him. The parchment would basically read that Zai is to guard Star no matter the situation, and obey every command given to him by Star.
"I suppose you are wondering why I would need protection?" she said in reference to Zulera's remarks. "I am an important person, you know. If anything were to happen to me, it could be fatal to our war effort. I cannot simply engage into combat with assasins or hostile enemies unless forced into doing so. Having a protector allows me to stay in perfect shape, as I do admit there must be somebody out there stronger than even me.." she let out a slight chuckle after.

"You and..Avatar Zulera" she looked at Zulera in order to let her know Star knows exactly who she is, "will both be given residence in my deluxe home. When we head for the Northern Tribe in one week you will stay in the suite with me on the ship. You will not be allowed to come with me to the meeting with Chief Kanoei however you will stand outside the meeting room."

"Signing that contract places you under my full command. It also means you are subject to Earth Kingdom rule. It is set to expire once the war has ended."

Zulera Joanna Tallarico

Zulera rolled her eyes. "I think you're more just a self-important person than an important one." she quipped. "just a thought."

she turned to Zai, mostly just looking at him to see if he was going to take it or not. she had interests to tag along, but she was not about to become the bodyguard of some helpless politician, or strategist or whatever she said she was. This wasn't a hatred forming or anything--Zulera just thought that this woman thought much too highly of herself, like that her death would lead to the ruin of the entire Earth Kingdom.

frankly, if someone as important and competent as Meili could go about with some of her business without needing protection, anyone could. no one was a bigger target than the nation leaders.

"so are you gonna take it?" she asked Zai curiously, figuring that the avatar personally was not going to be bound to service of any particular nation of the four. this was Zai's deal, though she'd be cool with tagging along.

Hakota-Zai

Zai stopped to think for a moment, looking over the contract. There was a catch, having to do anything ordered was indeed a catch in and of itself. But there was little Zai could be made to do that he'd care of. And if he were asked to do something of great distaste -say slaughter women and children or people he knew- then it was a simple thing to break a contract. He had a thousand consequences to live with, and breaking a contract wouldn't add too much to his life in proportion. He could only hope it didn't come to that.

Otherwise, there wasn't much to think of. It was alot of money for something Zai was especially good at. And he had a feeling Zulera wouldn't mind tagging along for the adventure of it.

"So are you gonna take it," she asked, tearing Zai's gaze from the contract a moment. He nodded. He didn't care who hired him, nor their reasons. Such a large amount of money was impossible to resist for a man in debt. And this would guarantee him enough to pay off his debts and drink away any sorrows or regrets for a lifetime.

"You have yourself a Primacy Guard, Commander," he said, giving an Earth Kingdom salute as if he'd been trained at some point for it. He withdrew an inkwell from his garbs, setting it upon the warboard before him, the cork on top removed swiftly. He motioned with a hand at the inkwell, the black substance within fluctuating a moment before a thin trail of ink was pulled from the rest. It moved like a serpent to the contract, bending and twisting above the line on which he was supposed to sign before falling into place, Hakota's signature put on the paper without flaw. Just another unconventional form of earthbending Zai had mastered.

"Now that I have signed my life away until this war's end, I warn you to use my services wisely. Misuse of an assassin's skills is not a flame to be toyed with." With that, he slid the contract back to Star, letting his stance soften and become less serious. "So what now, Commander?"

Mood:Buzzed, Indifferent.
Condition:Fit and Well.

Commander Star

With a smile on her face, Star took back the scroll and rolled it up. She listened to the smart words of Zai, and then heard a question. "So what now, Commander?" Zai spoke.

Star held out another scroll which she had pulled from a shelf in her large desk. "You leave my quarters and go make yourself at home in your new residence." she giggled "East of this building, maybe half a mile, there is a large building. The building has gold fencing and will have large letters displaying 'ZanZyar Manor'.". She tossed him a pair of keys. The keys were jewel-encrusted and were coloured metallic pink.

"Now get out. I won't see you until a week from today. Be ready to leave for the North at seven o'clock in the morning.".

Hakota-Zai

Zai caught the keys, mulling over the directions briefly before being to to leave. A weel before he began his job, then? He was fine with that. "Aye, aye, Commander." He turned to leave holding the door for Zulera. Once she parted he'd follow her out, passing the guards and leaving the official grounds.

He supposed there wasn't much to do but to go to the manor and await further orders. Was it a mistake to sign away to be a guard for someone he didn't know in the least? HE didn't care for the answer. He had no regrets so long as it paid
