The current one times you out for inactivity very quickly, and does not give you an option to automatically log in. Are there no better alternatives?

The first thing is kind of annoying, but I don't think manually logging in is too hard. If you know of any better chats, don't be afraid to speak up, but I don't think the chat system is awful.

I would recommend chatango.com
It's a flash-based chat that also updates in real-time, and is a lot more customizable. The one who creates the chat can also name and remove moderators [obviously], and it archives itself.

also, it logs you in and out when you're on the screen or off of it, so as long as you've given it a username and password, you will never have to worry about signing in or out again.

the only catch is that it's obviously not connected to the forums, and so some people might need to make new accounts for it. [I've also learned that you can use a bogus email address without any problems, so those worried about spam need not fear.]

that's my suggestion, anyhoo. it's used on a couple other sites I'm on, and it works great.

Well, I would've changed it if I knew how.
This chatbox is a built-in one. The only options it gives me is to enable/disable it and whether it should be shown at the top or bottom of the page.

Only way I currently know to put an offsite chatbox in is through a widget (at the side of the page) which is probably even more inconvenient due to it being so small.

The Earth Queen approves of this message.

I know that most off-site chatboxes usually just involve adding a bit of code at the top and/or bottom of a page, depending on where you want to put them.
granted, I do not know how it works on this forum, since this is the first forum from forumotion that I've joined.
but, I am familiar with some basics of forum coding.

Well ... I don't know how Forum Motion compares, but on Proboards, you go to the global page, and post the created chat's link.
