Novai

Just a few days earlier, Novai had declared war on the Earth Kingdom along with his allies, The Water Tribes. The Southern Water Tribe was destroyed, plundered, its civilians killed, they're leader murder. Their King was corrupt, at least Novai believed that the Earth Kingdom had a King, he had heard rumors of a so called "Queen" but this was probably just rumor to stall the SWT's revenge. Novai pushed forward with his invasion, at the coasts of Omashu a force of defenders were lined up. They're approximate number probably would make this a large battle, Novai shouted to one of his men "Tell EVERY ship we have, to mount the cannons, and on my command, fire". The enemy started stomping their feet, and the Earth started shaking, as Novai's Armada was also tilting back and forth. This strategy would make the cannons miss and severely delay our docking on land. Novai jumped into the air, and used his Firebending to keep him alift in the air, he blasted off in the direction of the enemy, and landed on the ground. The enemies easily recognized him, and everyone charged Novai, his battle suit was already a little worn out from the storms, but he knew that if he were to distract the enemies, his armada could dock and assist him.

The courage of the enemies was amazing, in fact Novai was surprised by how steadfast in their resolve they were. No matter what though, he had to break their formation. Novai inhaled deeply and then did a 360 spurting flames from his arms, becoming a tornado of flames. Using this technique he began to move around the enemy troops successfully burning them, and pushing them back. Meanwhile a few of his ships were able to dock, at least he wouldn't be doing all the work this time.

The Omashu Division

Because of its location near the south and the west, as well as the militaristic and economic importance of the city, Meili had deployed large numbers of defenses here. There was the regular defenses and troops that Omashu normally contained, but then there was also a small group of Air Nomad Warriors whose training was very similar to the warmongering styles of a certain Xilingshi Nailiah Zoraki. These, however, were preciously few in number, and so they had more specific orders. Their orders were to disrupt the skies, particularly outside the city. Anyone foolish enough to take their feet off the ground (or to fly a war balloon or zeppelin) would soon be facing the eye of a tornado. The longer the enemies could be kept out of the city, the better.

The ones leading the armies were a legion of Kyoshi Warriors; powerful marauders, many even being Earthbenders, with an age range of anywhere between 18 and 40. There was no real age limit here though. Avatar Kyoshi had been 230 when she had died, so one could not be too old. similarly, Meili knew that teenagers did not win wars, [OOC: derp] and so her warriors (most of them anyways) were not too young. The leader of this Kyoshi unit was a woman by the name of Felicia, and was one of the women in Meili's inner circle. She was familiar with how her queen worked, and with the defense of such a large city in her hands while the queen was off on other business, she had no intention of losing here.

The Air Warriors were only used to keep people out of the sky as the Earth Kingdom forces retreated into their protective city walls. They were instructed to stay far away from the actual fighting for the time being, because their numbers were few, and each one was therefore a valuable asset, to keep the Fire Nation or Water Tribe from gaining control of the skies. Felicia did give a few of them that were particularly itching for a fight, a note of reassurance. Any of them who know how to compress and combust air were welcome to shoot at their enemies. Felicia wanted them to have no chance against the Citadel of the Motherland.

The walls of the city were lined with catapults and other siege weapons. Earthbenders could throw their own boulders, and the ones without bending capabilities manned the catapults. Meili made sure her soldiers knew that they did not have to be benders to be useful. Thus, the scene of Omashu was one of crazy flying rocks, tornadoes, and all around carnage.
The Kyoshi Warriors were at the forefront of the action, and they were ensuring that the two sides did not have a level playing field--quite literally in fact. apart from shaking the earth outside of the city, they were bringing up jagged formations to make traversing the land difficult. some of these monstrous formations even got as far as the water, where their rocky shapes protruded from the water, where it would hopefully make the safe navigation of ships a tad difficult. This had been why Meili had deployed so many troops to the coasts only a few days earlier. they were rigging the field.

"So..." Felicia smirked, noticing a very obviously powerful figure coming towards them in a swirling mass of flames, "the Fire Lord himself is in on the action."
she turned to her most trusted generals and passed instruction to them. The Airbenders were to focus their winds on him. They did not want enough force to try and kill him just enough to push him back.

waaaaaay back.

Even the heaviest of warships or tanks could only handle winds at certain speeds. something as small as a human body wouldn't be able to resist such winds for very long. With the winds, the rocks, and the warriors, getting in would be difficult--not necessarily impossible, because there were few things that were truly impossible--but still very difficult.

"what's it going to be?" Felicia laughed to herself as she and the Kyoshi Warriors launched rocks at their foes in unison, "fighting the violent winds or the rumbling earth? You have no hope here..."

[OOC--obviously she's not expecting anyone, let alone Novai, to hear what she just said, but it's for good effect.
I suppose we should also figure out how we're going to to do this fighting, and how we are going to decide how well (or not) each side does.]

Novai

[OOC - I agree, this battle is on the coasts of Omashu, and its covered with hills which would provide good defensive ground for the Defenders. On the subject of how well each side does, if you repulse us at the coast, then the RP will stop and we'll have to hold off fighting for more days. I don't know about you, but I want to fight, so how about let a few ships on land and have the FN gain some ground? Meili is in Gaoling so I think its okay if you use Felicia to fight me.]

The day progressed and the fighting continued, dead carcasses here and there, it was as though Novai was plunged in hell. Continuing his tornado of flames, he whirled around many of the warriors, sucking them in the flaming vortex and then plunging them out coughing and seared. A group of Airbending masters surrounded Novai, and through their bending stopped his onslaught. The group consisted of 5 elderly monks who had told the Kyoshi Warriors and Earthbenders to move away.

Novai grinned, he was about to fight some powerful masters, Novai shouted to his troops who had begun to embark off the ships "MOVE FORWARD! CANNONS FIRE!". The air began to litter with dozens of hot boiling meteors that were on fire, they rained over the enemy formations and destroyed much of their organization. Even that was not enough, his enemies simply regrouped.

Novai had to concentrate more on his opponents than he could on his own troops, the situation was very tense. He fire bended amazing arrays of blue flames at his aggressors pushing them back, and then breathed the flames into the air intimidating them. However that was not enough as his opponents kept firing blasts of air towards him. Novai had to end it, he jumped into the air and came crashing down plunging his fist into the earth with massive flames surrounding him, finally making his opponents fly into the air.

The day began to ween into night, and the enemy troops began to withdraw slowly, they knew that the coasts were lost, and casualties on both sides were high. Only a foolish commander would tell his troops to continue attacking. Novai told one of his generals on the battlefield General Mathias to camp his soldiers on the eastern border of the battlefield, where at least 50 ships were docked. The rest of the Armada (50 left) would sail into the secret port swamp that Novai had found.

The plan was simple, the armada would capture the enemy troops from the behind, while Novai and Mathias were distracting them from the front.

[ha, ha, ha... I'm not just going to let you *gain* ground. I'm fine with fighting, but not if the only way to do so is at my expense.

granted, I am reasonable enough that if a clever enough tactic is thrown my way, ther might be some retreating done on my part.
UNLESS... we repulse you to the coast and then sabotage your ships like the FN did to the WT in Day of the Black Sun. Whatever the case, I'll be reasonable and let the fight take its course, advancing or retreating depending on what happens =) ]

The Omashu Division

One thing quickly became certain--while the Earth Queen's Forces were competent at what they were doing, it was clear that because of their proximity to the ocean and the Fire Navy's ships, that they could not get an upper hand in such conditions. Felicia quickly realized this, and so as they fought, they let the Fire Nation advance as they retreated. Using the Airbenders as a forward counterattack, their tornadoes stalled many of the firebenders as the Earth Kingdom forces, Kyoshi Warriors included, gradually made their way back towards Omashu. Felicia quietly passed the word on to her grunts, who spread it quickly to the airbenders, and to the rest of the troops.

Their retreat was not one that was broadcasted. it was gradual and subtle. let the Fire Nation gain a little uninhabited territory while they made their way back to the safe confines of Omashu. if they dared attack the Citadel of the Motherland[OOC--a Kyoshi Warrior nickname for Omashu], they would find themselves crossing paths with the Wolfpack in all its might.

Omashu wasn't exactly easy to get to, since it was on top of a mountain which was surrounded by a deep chasm except for a small land bridge. once the Earth Kingdom was all safely inside the city, they could keep most people out as long as they controlled that strategic point.

The Kyoshi Warriors were not about to let the Fire Nation simply push them all the way back to Omashu without a fight though. No respectable Kyoshi Warrior under Meili's rule would ever go down without at least some kind of fight. some earthebenders kicked up large amounts of sand, which was then thrown into the skies in front of them by groups of wily airbenders. Using the air to control the winds, they kept the boundaries of the storm well in front of most of their own troops. the only downside this had was that it also reduced visibility when throwing rocks or catapult projectiles into the fray, but that was a decent price to pay. if they could tamper with the firebenders' ability to breathe right, they could very well inhibit their firebending itself.

Whatever the case, the onslaught would not stop until the Fire Nation was running back to their ships. It seemed like a game of waiting as Felicia allowed her troops to slowly push themselves back.

Hayato Yamada
The "Lei Sheng Gu"

Lightning strikes.

The retreating Earth Nation forces would soon find themselves under attack as fire lashed out against them as they ran. Fire Nation soldiers had appeared on this battlefield's Northeastern front. General Hayato's troops had made their way through the swamplands, and had circled around to this new position. Three fourths of the troops spread out towards the retreating forces, intending to wedge themselves between those who had run and those who were trying to run, effectively cutting off their retreat. Their ability to repel this unexpected factor in addition to the Fire Lord's unit would determine whether or not this wedge would be effective or not. The X-factor in this would be that General Hayato himself was leading this charge, adding a huge amount of offense that they would have to defend against. They'd have to defend against the "Lei Sheng Gu's" might. Lightning would strike many times this day.

Meanwhile, the remaining one fourth of these troops would charge down towards the Fire Lord's position, with the intention to reenforce the troops Novai had lost during the previous day. Hayato had plenty to work with with the other 3/4ths as he had lost none. If his gambit to wedge themselves between the retreating forces was successful, half of his troops would remain to push back anyone who aimed to help those they had caught, while the other half would close in around those who's ability to retreat had been cut off and finish them off, either by forcing a surrender or by killing them. Hayato would remain at the forefront of the defending half, personally pushing back anyone he could if it came to that.

Novai

It was midday, and Novai's army was clashing once again with the enemy, this time he couldn't seem to gain ground as well as the day before. It was probably because he had meteors rain down from the ships and today the enemies were well around all cannon firing. Novai grinned as he realized he did have an advantage, subtle but still useful, the coast on which Novai fought had different soil composure, the beach was sandy, but as you walked further up the terrain became harder. This was perfect for tanks, he would have his tanks settle in the sandy part of the beaches, and fire upwards towards the enemy, sure they could reign rocks down towards him, but there were just too many tanks. Novai had 50 ships under his command, and another 50 commanded by Mathias, by around 1:00, almost all of his armada had effectively docked onto the coasts of Omashu.

Tanks began to pour out of the ships at a steady constant rate, and steadily the tide of the battle began to change in their favor. Novai was no longer in the front commanding his troops but on the sandy beach coordinating with General Mathias. Several Lieutenants reported of heavy rock showers, earth avalanches, and god knows what else... it was certainly stressful. Even in all the stress and tedious work he had faced, Novai was hopeful that Hayato, his top general would be able to ambush the enemy troops. Novai wanted to be at the doorsteps of Omashu by night, even midnight if he had to force his troops.

The plan had been simple, Novai, Mathias, and Hayato were to capture Omashu, set up HQ and then spread like a plague through the Earth Kingdom. However the first drawback was landing onto the beach, they had done that, but Novai noticed the small inlet leading into a swamp, which was guarded by no enemy troops. The people of the swamp were water benders no earth benders, obviously they would side with their people, so Novai had sent Hayato there, and then slowly relayed to Hayato what to do.

Hayato was to sandwhich the enemy defenders while Mathias and Novai pushed forwards to the capital, if they could capture enemy troops, they could use them as bargaining chips to let the FN conquer Omashu. Either that, or Novai would have to cut the bridge to Omashu, and starve the people inside, they didn't have tunnels in a mountain that lead outwards, only downwards. Theres only a certain point you could dig underground until all you meet is boiling hot lava, and thats exactly what he wanted his enemies to meet.

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

The noises from over the mountains reached the keen ears of an Air Nomad Warrior nestled safely within the confines of Omashu. A staff in hand, Xilingshi walked the very walls of the city, her nimble Air nomad grace and the air in her step made the pit-pat of her bare feet on the stone go unnoticed. It wasn't even that she was sneaking around--she was just walking on the walls in broad daylight. the war had not come through the mountain passes yet, and so Omashu itself was not yet in any danger.

Almost like the antithesis of a normal airbender, this meant that Xilingshi was restless. She had stationed herself and a handful of her explosive troops in Omashu so she could get a taste of the action. Felicia had been a bit daring in sending a large force out in hopes of pushing the enemies back, and she wondered how they were doing. whipping out her glider [OOC it's the staff she carries] , she flew far and over the mountains before getting a view of what was going on. Felicia's troops were all but shut in between two groups of firebenders. This wa senough for her to give herself an invitation to take her warriors, rendezvous with the warriors nestled in the mountains, and make this 3-group sandwich into a 4-way one. They had to save Felicia, anyways.

Xilingshi took her division of troops out and met up with the Kyoshi Warriors and Earthbenders that had embedded themselves in the mountains, a few words of warning later, they were pouring out of the mountain, charging towards General Hayato's troops. there was still plenty of distance they needed to cover, but Xilingshi was among many who were determined to get to them. She and her warriors stayed high in the skies, shooting their compressed air-bombs at the ground below, aiming mostly for the patches of red, and trying to avoid the patches of green. "bombing" wasn't exactly nice to those who got caught in the crossfire. at the same time, word was immediately sent to the south to alert Queen Meili of the ongoing attack on Omashu,. with that much of the Firelord's force there, it was recommended that she bring her troops that way as well.

Either way, however, it would be at least a week, maybe two, before she would be able to arrive, and so they didn't put their faith in trying to wait for Meili. that would be suicide. Xilingshi would just have to hope that Felicia stayed alive for her own sake, and that Xilingshi, her troops, and the mountain troops would be able to make a difference as they launched their attack.

The Omashu Division

Okay... so NOW there was a real problem. Another squadron of firebenders had appeared, just as big as the one Novai had led. Felicia quickly surveyed the area, and estimated the distance. they would have to be incredibly fast to be able to escape, and Felicia seriously doubted that her troops would be able to all make it past them in time.

But that certainly did not mean that she or her troops had any intention of making this easy for them. Nay, Felicia was even content with giving her own life up if her maneuvers were enough to give hell to the Firelord. But... if giving her own life could be avoided, she would choose that option without a sliver of consideration.

the retreat became much faster, as it became a dodging, hit-and-run style of retreat instead of active fighting. several earthbenders and airbenders teamed up to kick up large sandstorms in front of their enemies to stall their advance, or at least to inhibit their vision a bit as Felicia's troops charged towards Omashu--and towards Hayato's troops, hoping to beat them to the mountains. She sincerely hoped that the movement from the mountains themselves was their own troops and not more enemy troops, but from this distance, it was impossible to tell.

The Kyoshi Warriors were swift on their feet, but their power and speed did not mean that the other troops were weak, by any plausible means. Kyoshi Warriors just happened to be one of Meili's top-of-the-line defenses, which was why she had built an army. Luckily for the Earth kingdom, most of the elite marauders were still in Omashu proper.

as the armies moved closer to each other, it was clear that they were going to collide with Hayato's forces, and so it was time to play a few nastier tactics. It was time to bring in more tornadoes, and make more earthquakes. The Airbenders, who were few but powerful, began whipping up tornadoes and sensing them back towards the Firelord's forces, while the Kyoshi Warriors created huge fault lines, which the other masses of earthbenders used to make the land beneath the feet of the Fire Nation begin to shake.

"the Fire Lord's a fool if he thought we would go down easy." Felicia chuckled to herself as she got in on the earth-shaking action.

Hayato Yamada
The "Lei Sheng Gu"

While none here had the opportunity to physically combat the war time tactics being used, the counter tactics could be easily found by looking to history. Looking towards history was one of Hayato's favorite hobbies. The Fire Nation had fought every single nation sometime in the past. They knew how to fight wars against every type of bending. Even without physical practice, Hayato's opinion of history made sure they trained mock operations in doing so. Times of peace left plenty of time for training, especially when the General was so obsessed with training that has trained every day for 29 years, it made perfect sense that he would have trained his men into the ground. It was questionable if the others had trained quite as much, though it was surely possible.

Regardless, with his wedge tactic successful. Hayato focused on his next move. The Kyoshi's tactics were effective, but they'd be difficult to maintain with firey assaults from both Hayato's AND Novai's troops hammering down upon them at every second, from both sides. Hayato's forces may have had their attention split, but so did Felicia's. Novai's, however, did NOT. As far as Hayato was concerned, with Felicia's unit being assaulted on both sides by Hayato and Novai's forces, they would be eliminated as a factor soon enough. Novai and the half of Hayato's troops that were facing that way could handle that. Hayato, himself, focused his attention on the fresh factor in the fight.

While that side was being dealt with, Hayato's half began their assault on the newcomers. The Airbenders, while they may have been high, where far from invisible. Their presence was quickly picked out, their damage before that minimal. A huge wave of fire streams aimed upwards towards them from the back lines would deal with most of the air bombs. The front most lines dealt with the oncoming Earthbenders and the Kyoshi. Flames, Earth, and weaponry collided and would collide. Hayato focused his own attention towards the sky. As far as he was concerned the Airbenders were the bigger threat at the moment. So he would strike them down. Lightning blanketed the sky. Instead of the sky striking the ground; the ground would strike the sky. Red lightning erupted from Hayato's fingertips, and it tore through the sky, aimed at an Airbender that had the gall to strike at his men. If they did not know before, they would know now that they were dealing with the "Lei Sheng Gu." The red lightning held a two fold meaning. It would show the Airbenders and the Earthbenders what power they were dealing with, but it would show every Firebender that their General stood right on the battlefield with them, easily renewing their resolve as their assault continued.

Novai

The attack was double fronted, Novai pushing from the front and Hayato pushing from the rear. The enemy was clearly sandwiched between the Fire Nation Army, there was no escape, and hopefully the strategy would prevail. Novai glanced up at the sky, red lightning streaking it, blood flying everywhere, it was the work of General Hayato, the man certainly had a reputation to be reckoned with. Hayato had been the longest standing general both his father Tuzai and now Novai had ever seen, if there was one Firebender who was more adept at generating Lightning, it was Hayato. The red lightning was indicative of Hayato's abilities, an analogy of this would be Blue flames, they were much more powerful than regular red ones, in the same manner Red Lightning was much more powerful than regular lightning.

On the battlefield, the moment Novai saw the red lightning, he shouted at his men to charge the enemy will all of their strength, the tanks were rolling up hill firing dozens upon dozens of meteors on the enemy. Novai's idea was such, the enemy was in the air (air nomads) and on the ground (Kyoshi), if Novai aimed right, the meteors would either hit the flying targets, if not it would destroy a part of the enemy army. Thus no one from his army or Hayato's would be affected.

It was around 7:00 when Novai felt the fighting was dragging on for too long, the enemy army was signifcantly reduced if not depleted however they were pulling through. Novai needed to unite his army and Hayato's and the enemy would be crushed. It was a simple task, but the sheer numbers of the enemy was overwhelming due to fresh airbenders flying in from Omashu (no ground force reinforcements), nevertheless Novai leaped into the fray, Air Nomads were not the only ones who could fly. Novai was adept at using his blue flames in midair, the blue flames sprouted from the ball of his foot, and Novai was in the air, attacking the enemy nomad's burning their gliders and watching them fall to their doom. Air supremacy was vital in this war, however Novai had to be weary of not colliding with Hayato's lightning strikes, and making sure he wasn't destroyed with air bombs.

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

There was little honor that was visibly seen among Air Nomad Warriors, who had a tendency to hit and run, using their wily speed to keep their much slower enemies off balance. But, that did not mean they were devoid of it; it just meant that the Air Nomad traditions had been discarded by these marauders, who had become warriors as opposed to monks and nuns. It was a game of tactics, where their speed was against the Fire Nation's power. Speed was all they needed in the skies, but a little power certainly never hurt. Such was the ways of Xilingshi.

Her goal was to cause enough of a diversion among the Fire Nation troops that Felicia's troops would be able to break through the ranks, and so their tactics were mostly diversionary. They were not trying to get too close in combat, because their speed and ability to dodge attacks was what made them good at what they did. If they were able to get back into Omashu, then the casualty rate on the Earth Kingdom side would plummet, as few would wish to venture out of the safety of the citadel. Why meet your enemies on equal ground when you had an advantage at the higher ground? Xilingshi was unsure why Felicia had done that, but she was certain that the Kyoshi General had more knowledge on war than she did, so she didn't think much about it.

Xilingshi's tactic was to stall them long enough for the ground forces embedded in the mountains to make their way over as reinforcements. the Firelord's forces could be better worried about and handled when the remaining troops were in the city. From there, they could resort to simply bombing things at them, as the walls and fortifications of Omashu were the higher ground, and the Air Nomads would ensure control of the skies. As long as Xilingshi drew breath, she would not let anyone take control of the skies from her.

Then the lightning began to strike. for the Air Nomads, this was a matter of reflex, and hoping that they were far enough to allow the firebenders and lightningbenders to miss their strikes. this proved true most of the time, but a few unfortunate warriors did get struck down. However, seeing their comrades tumble to the earth in the shock only pumped the others up even more, and they continued their violent onslaught, sending their compressed air--bombs towards any clusters of people, or particularly, any tanks, catapults, or other siege equipment. Break those, and dealing with the siege itself would be much easier. That, and it would loosen chunks of rock and ground, giving earthbenders an easier time to sweep the large chunks of earth towards their enemies. It was a low-risk, and high return business, that's for sure.

The Air Warrior morale was kept up by The Soldier of the Skies. Xilingshi had personally taught many of these Air Nomads, and so to see the moves she taught them being put into full use for maximum effect was quite inspiring for them as many sought to emulate the master at her work. Xilingshi just hoped she could buy enough times for the eatrthbenders nestled in the mountains to get back out and onto the field to bring the needed aid to Felicia.

Xilingshi was determined to keep her monopoly over the skies, and so when the Firelord tried taking to the skies, she had found her target, and it was time to have a test of skill, and pit his power against her speed. she zipped through the skies to meet the maker of the blue fire, and put him back on the ground where he belonged--preferably heavily injured, or even better, dead. But, Xilingshi knew that to kill the firelord would be no easy task, and wounding him enough to the point of incapacitation would not be much easier.

she started forming a circular current around him as she flew in circles. ideally, it would become a vortex that would make breathing--and therefore firebending--difficult. Whatever the case, Xilingshi wanted fierce enough winds to get him out of the sky, and to let the Fire Nation know that their Dear Leader was actually being challenged for his foolhardy motion of attacking. After all... few Air Nomads had forgotten the crimes that nation had committed against their people--and with the fighting spirit that these particular airbenders had, it was not likely to be forgotten.

The Omashu Division

Felicia breathed a sigh of relief with the presence of the Air Nomads, and with the movement of troops on the mountains that the Air Warriors did not appear to be focusing on, Felicia could only hope and pray they were allies. She would just ask an Airbender, but they were far too high in the sky, and they didn't seem to have much interest in changing that.

Incidentally, had she been able to ask an airbender, she would have learned that the troops coming out of the mountains were in fact hers, but she didn't have time to worry about that. What she needed were more diversionary tactics to kill time while the reinforcements approached.

It was time to begin doing what the airbenders did, earthbender style.

it was time to resort to hit-and-run attacks.
Felicia shouted out the signal. at once, hundreds of earthbenders and Kyoshi Warriors vanished underground, reappearing moments later in different places. They were aware that many would die, and so some of the more bold ones resurfaced in the middle of various troops and started launching rocks and bludgeoning their enemies until they were shot down or killed. A cornered creature would always strike.

with the systematic method of retreat gone, it was more of a game of whack-an-earthbender. they would sink underground, reappear, strike and then disappear underground again. It didn't always work, but the earth that was their landscape certainly played them a favorable hand.

Hayato Yamada
The "Lei Sheng Gu"

Hayato's eyes caught a certain one of the Airbenders divulge off from the pack. The sudden drop in power of their assault and the fact that she had the guts to go straight for the Fire Lord implied that she was the leader of the Airbenders here. Hayato silently questioned the logic behind abandoning her squadron, but instead of continuing that, he instead continued his assault.

His side's opposing force's tactics hadn't changed. The only thing that had changed were the numbers. Conveniently the Airbender's could not possibly have the numbers the Fire Nation did, the Earthbender's were a different story, but not only were the Air Nomads the SMALLEST percentile of the population, the amount of warriors they had, or rather would, offer up to war was exceedingly small. That meant that every single casualty to them meant far more than the Fire Nation's. Hayato had 50 ships worth of soldiers at his back. He had plenty to work with. The Airbenders were taking out his soldiers, yes, but for every few that fell the Airbenders lost their own as well, and each one that fell would be a much larger chunk.

As the Airbender's offense had not changed, Hayato's counter had not either. Large numbers of the Airbenders strikes where cut off with the huge number of fire streams from his back lines, the men lost to the attacks that got through were quickly replaced. As they were distracted, either from avoiding the fire or using there Bending to move it aside, Hayato would strike them down with his Lightning or they would be do busy trying to deal with his lightning to avoid the fire. They would need to adjust their strategy if they intended to not be slowly picked off by Hayato's tactics that had all ready shown themselves to work. That adjustment would be difficult considering their leader had run off to fight the Fire Lord.

The opposite side, however, HAD changed their losing strategy. Their new tactic was an effective one, but not an invincible one. Hayato's units would lose many a troop to this tactic, but they wouldn't lose enough to stop. The Kyoshi's squadron were cornered, and they knew it. Their refusal to surrender against these stacked odds was impressive. It would likely cost them their lives, but it was still impressive. The thing about them being underground was that, even they were able to use seismic sense, which was unlikely, they wouldn't be able to tell what was in the air above them. It was only a matter of time until the sheer multitude of flames they were dealing with meant they would pop up only to be flayed alive. There was no question that the surrounded soldiers were outnumbered. Either by accident, or clever timing, the surrounded Kyoshi's would run out of troops long before the Fire Nation did if they continued on as they were.

Novai

The air was warm and thick, and the sun blazed down from a small inlet of clouds onto his body, empowering his fire. The red lightning Hayato had showered on the enemy had a powerful effect, Airbenders were dying, and for every one of them a few fire benders would die. Nevertheless the battle was going smoothly, yet he was being charged midair by an unknown Airbender. It was a woman, but Novai would not underestimate her, she was a serious threat, Novai paced his flames, they kept him in the air so he launched himself straight towards the enemy airbender head on, as she glided away and around him, cooling him down with her airbending.

This, Novai had to admit was a nuisance, a nuisance he wouldn't tolerate, he moved close enough to the enemy and started to super charge the heat in his body. Yes, he would become a living supernova, one of the many techniques his ancestors had learned, was to increase your internal heat to reduce damage, yet Novai's technique was a little different, he would overheat and then explode next to the enemy. The recoil existed, but since he had sun shining on him, he would take less damage if any, the sun was his source of strength and inner flame.

The airbender moved all over the place, but Novai's own flames could move faster and thus he propelled himself to his opponent and exploded. The heat knocked his opponent back, but only momentarily, as Novai studied her midair, he noticed he had seared and burnt a side of her glider. No matter, Novai thought, he would have to take this opponent down, he pointed his palm at her and let out a blast of blue flames. Moving his hand towards wherever she glided, Novai was swift in making sure the entire glider was on fire, what she would do now, Novai didn't care, his troops were being halted on the ground and that was much more important than airbender breezes in the sky.

Novai landed on the ground, the stream of flames from his feet stopped, he spoke to his lieutenant asking him about the situation "How are things going down here?", Novai had to scream just to make his voice heard, "THINGS ARE OKAY, but were taking damage from the EARTHBENDERS!" the Liuetenant replied. Novai had heard enough, he would have to fly to the front lines and deal with this personally. By the time he reached the front lines he realized that his opponents would come up from the ground and earthbender his army backwards.

This strategy was clever, Novai had to give them that, but it was by far not enough to defeat his army nor Hayato's which was on the otherside dealing with the same maneuver. It was at that moment that Novai had an idea, he would burn the earth, letting his opponents bake underground, he told his troops to firebend into the earth, it was a sad way to die, under the earth already, but cooked alive. He seriously hoped the leader of their contingency would surrender, their airbenders and earthbenders were dying right and left, while his troops suffered minimal loses.

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

Heat was something Xilingshi could handle. She had been to the desert, where there was nothing between her and the blazing heat of the sun itself. She was also used to explosions. her combustion technique had gotten her used to the force part quite well, as she did not simply master that in a day without some error. Whatever the case, she could not handle both the heat and the explosions without a bit of damage, and this was where the unlucky part came in.

She suddenly became thankful that she didn't bring her lucky glider to this war, since the one she was using had just caught fire. If her prized glider was gone, she would be a bit more than angry. Right now though, she was concentrating on not letting her body hit the ground in a splatter of blood and guts, and instead, saving her hide. as she tumbled to the ground, she thrust her hands forward and made an air sphere. as fast as the Firelord's flames were, they were not fast enough to catch up with Xilingshi.

her fall was stopped by her airbending, but it was her hands that were making the air ball, instead of her crossed legs, and so she was effectively doing a handstand on the sphere with her legs sticking out on either side. She didn't have time to worry about that though, and so she zipped through the ranks of firebenders to try and get to safety. on the way, she passed by the body of one of her fallen comrades. her perpetual frown grew for a moment, but she did not have time to mourn the dead. instead, this became one of the many times she was glad that she never wore shoes.

using her foot, she was able to snatch up a glider from one of the fallen, and she brought one of her hands up to take it from her foot, open it, and then launch herself from her air scooter and into the sky. it was an impressive display of nimbleness and acrobatics, indeed.

Originally she was about to join the final struggle in an attempt to retreat, but then something else caught her eye--a man wielding red lightning. he was much closer to where Xilingshi was trying to get, and so she carved her way through the troops to get there. she occasionally shot a few air-bombs down at the troops below, but her main focus was stopping that man from blasting any more of her friends and comrades out of the sky.

She didn't try the buzzing around him technique that she had tried on the flrelord. instead, she circled in low, sending in quick gusts of wind instead of the air-bombs, which took much longer. It was time to see how he reacted to her presence, as he may have recognized her as the woman who had flown off before--after all, by this time, most of the Air nomads were making their retreat, and a few lucky Kyoshi Warriors had made it into the mountains as they were creeping back to Omashu.

The Omashu Division

Realizing that her situation was more or less hopeless, Felicia grudgingly bellowed her final order.

"FIGHT YOUR WAY TO OMASHU, OR DIE TRYING!"

There were far too few of them to surrender, and even if they did, what then? Face a life where they would rot in the prison hold of some ship? Did the Fire Nation even have time to take prisoners at this point? Felicia's warriors certainly did not want to be put to death.

But the Fire Nation continued to turn up the heat, and some of their warriors were even resorting to firing at locations where they thought earthbenders would pop up. a few times they were successful, but that was like randomly shooting at a flock of birds, since there was no way to tell their movement under the ground, especially given who quickly they popped up and disappeared. There were certainly still casualties, however, as the numbers of the warriors in their final struggle slowly diminished.

the firebending towards the earth did little to affect anyone underground. many of the earthbenders learned that if they hardened the earth sufficiently, it would take a while for the earth to sufficiently heat up and burn them underground. It did make surfacing a little trickier though, and so the earthbenders had to move quickly when they sank and popped up. the earth near the surface was hot; almost like dashing through flames. however, similar to the way one dashed through flames, it did not ensure that they would be burned, let alone to death--it just meant that they'd be rushing through a hot place, which meant they had to move quickly when they did so.

the remaining soldiers continued their fighting retreat, going into fierce bouts of rage in their final struggle. They knew that most of them would not make it into the mountains, and so they wished to take down as many Fire Nation soldiers as they could. It seemed they were compensating fairly well for their losses as they made their final struggles. Even Felicia was lost somewhere in the fray, and no one knew if she was alive or not. If she was, then she was being wonderfully evasive, just like the final Kyoshi Warriors were. the regular earthbender troops were mostly gone or a few had escaped to the mountains at this point, and most of the remaining soldiers were Kyoshi Warriros who found their odds slowly turning against them as they fell. As with the earthbenders, a few made it into the mountain passes with some pure dumb luck, and a couple of stronger airbenders even swooped down and picked up a couple of them to fly them to safety. For the most part, however, the battle here was done, as the remaining warriors' numbers began to diminish.

...or was it? there were a couple of persistent folks, such as the airbender [Xilingshi] who was going after General Hayato, but most of them knew they were fighting losing battles, and so they wanted to make their last breaths count.

Hayato Yamada
The "Lei Sheng Gu"

Despite the Earthbenders apparent belief that they were invincible behind, or rather under, their wall of earth, they were, in fact, not. Hayato intended to prove this fact. One set of the fleeing Earthbenders appeared directly in front of the General as they flipped back up from traveling underground. Time seemed to slow down as the General and the Earthbenders made their next moves. Hayato's hand rose up, two fingers up, red lightning crackling at his finger tips. The Earthbenders started their flip at the same time. Before they made it all the way underground, they'd see Hayato raise the rest of his fingers, the amount of crackling lightning increasing with each one. The last thing they'd see before being completely underground was Hayato forming that hand into a fist.

The Earthbenders would soon see the light of day once more. Hayato brought his lightning charged fist to the ground and unleashed the full brunt of his charged lightning. The earth that covered the retreating Earthbenders and Kyoshi was torn apart by Hayato's mighty strike. Their surprise at this was palpable. But that would not last, as his troops struck them down, Hayato making sure he looked them right in the eye as they died.

It was at this point, Hayato began to be harassed by a particular Airbender. Considering how far away she had been when he saw her last, Hayato did not recognize her as the one who had broken off from the other Air Benders. He stood his ground at the gust she had thrown at him, sliding back a fair distance, but not falling down. He ended the gust before it came to that, managing to swipe his arm in front of him against the force of the wind, a wave of fire forming in its wake. It was fairly obvious what she was attempting by attacking him, but that was fine with him. He had made his point. The rest could run if they wished. Of course, that didn't stop his troops from continuing to strike at those that fled.

Hayato, however, did not strike at the Airbender. His troops understood what he was doing and did not attack her. Hopefully, the Airbender understood and came down to ground level. As far as Hayato was concerned, by attacking him specifically, she had challenged him directly. Hayato's actions were meant to clearly imply his acceptance of her challenge. He would only wait a short amount of time to see if he was correct and for her to come and face him, before he would continue his previous attacks.

Novai

Novai was plaintively sure that this ground assault had succeeded, the earthbenders were being annihilated when they rose from the ground and then sank back in. It was a game of whack a mole, but the Fire Nation was winning, all he had to do was wait and strike, since they heat was not burning his opponents. All of a sudden though, Hayato struck the ground, and the Earthbenders were exposed, their ground cover demolished. It was an amazing display of red lightning, and the punch to the ground obliterated everything underground. This show of strength reaffirmed Novai's confidence that he would not die on this siege nor would he let Hayato die, Hayato was the only link between Novai and his father after all.

Novai nevertheless realized soon enough, that the enemy was in full retreat, no longer throwing rocks, but making the earth hostile for Novai to follow them. It was with luck that Novai was able to move his tanks and men forwards, he was gaining ground rapidly, and they had the entire coastal area of Omashu under their control. It was a matter of time now, just a sit and wait strategy until the perfect opportunity to attack. A few moments ago, Novai had burnt the Airbender General's glider, she fell to the ground, at least thats what Novai thought. As all the Earth Kingdom troops retreated this one Airbender directly attacked Hayato. Novai would have to support Hayato, so he told his troops to advance straight towards Hayato's troops and to merge our two armies once again. This was a one fronted battle all over again.

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

most of the remaining airbenders had finished their retreat. the few that had escaped had fled into the mountains and instructed the troops there to pull back to Omashu. They had not killed enough time to reinforce Felicia's army, and so it was better to put themselves to use in a place where they would not be so at risk.

However, some characters, such as Xilingshi, enjoyed that risk. She was one of few that stayed behind, so she hoped that her plan to challenge the general would work without every single soldier focusing their fire on her. Otherwise, she'd have to haul it out of there as fast as her bending could carry her.

But it seemed he knew what she was doing, and so after her few initial strikes, and realizing that he wasn't attacking, she concluded that her plan had worked. To say that there was no honor among an Air Nomad who had abandoned their traditional ways would be a lie. Xilingshi held her honor in a very high regard, and was not about to defile it by attacking someone in this manner who wasn't attacking her. So, she let herself drop from the sky, twirling her glider before she hit the ground, stopping her fall. her bare feet landed softly on the ground, about 10 feet in front of Hayato. She folded her glider up and kept it in her gloved hand with one end planted on the ground, as she faced Hayato to see how he would react to her landing.

She had a firm stance, but it was clear that she was staying passive, not about to attack before she learned that Hayato's next move would be. There was no honor in killing someone who wasn't about to suddenly attack.

Hayato Yamada
The "Lei Sheng Gu"

Hayato's troops stood back and the Airbender's troops had fallen back; his soldiers would not be interfering. Hopefully, Novai and his troops would do the same. Hayato gave the Airbender before him the once over. It was fairly obvious that he was sizing up who he was dealing with here. Of course, that's not to say that Hayato made too many assumptions based on looks alone. That was certainly a mistake many people make, one that Hayato had learned a long time ago not to make. The Airbender was likely expecting Hayato to strike. Instead he spoke.

"I am both impressed and a little bit disappointed to meet someone like you on the battlefield, miss. You and your comrades are certainly skilled at the art of war. Yet that is perhaps the most troublesome thing I've seen today. You are Air Nomads. Every one of you. I can not help but question what has led you to throw away what you are by waging war. This isn't even your home. You throw aside your culture and for what? To defend the Earth Kingdom? There must be something more. You've shown you still have honor by agreeing to fight me and me alone. So I ask that you answer me one question before we begin. Why are you fighting us for the Earth Kingdom? Surely you know that by fighting us here, you have marked you people as enemies. You cannot claim you're doing this to defend your homeland. By doing it you've put your homeland in danger. We have not attacked you. I had no intention to. By fighting us here, I cannot promise that the Fire Lord will leave your people alone. Did you simply not know this? Or do you have some other reason? Humor me. What means so much to you that you'd throw away your history and culture to fight to defend the Earth Kingdom?"

Xilingshi Nailah Zoraki

Xilingshi analyzed her opponent during the few moments of motionlessness. It seemed that he was not the type that would try to suddenly launch an attack, but her certainly looked as powerful as he proved. most people might have felt insecure about themselves in front of a powerful man like this, but little Xilingshi was unfazed, despite her situation of being a small airbender woman in front of a large Fire Nation man.

She listened attentively as he spoke, and she processed his words as her uttered them. he brought up many interesting points, but Xilingshi was not a blind follower of the Earth Kingdom, the Air Council, or anyone else for that matter. She made her own decisions.

"You bring up interesting points, General." she nodded. given his uniform, and if nothing else, his power and skill, Xilingshi assumed he was a man of high rank. whether or not General was the right title for him was beyond Xilingshi, but she was sure if she was wrong that she would either be corrected, or it would be overlooked.
"and so," she continued, "allow me to explain. I, as many others, was very aware of the Fire Nation's genocide upon our people 180 years ago. While it is not the reason that we chose to fight you today, it is why I and many others have become warriors. We educated ourselves in the arts of self-defense, so that we could be there to defend ourselves should war ever happen again. Sacrificing culture for the defense of our people was a worthy goal for a small number of us. We were not trying to turn Air Nomad Society upside down, and while I am responsible for training many airbenders in the art of war, none of it was ever forced. All of them were those who volunteered."

"as for the reason we are fighting for the Earth Kingdom, one might wish to ask the same from you. It was not your leader that was killed, it was not your Tribe that was wronged. This is the Water Tribe's War. We fight for the Earth Kingdom because of the support they have given us throughout the years and in helping us rebuild. When Queen Meili warned us about the potential attacks from the North and South, even we were aware that our temples and lands stand between the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom. The last thing my friends ad I wanted was for people from any nation to march through our lands for any reason other than providing defense or support."

By this point, she was the last airbender left alive on the fields. the others were dead, or had retreated. Nonetheless, there was conviction in her voice, and she was not afraid of being surrounded the way she was.

"So you might say that we are fighting for the Earth Kingdom the same way your nation is fighting the Water Tribe's War. These are our allies, and they continue to support us, and so we will support them with those that wish to fight. Those that did not wish to fight are not obligated to."

she sighed and took a deep breath.
"Another thing that we Air Nomads see is a potential for a huge disruption in balance, similar to the one that was nearly faced during the 100-year-war. there are Four Nations, and that needs to remain a constant. We will not side with the aggressors in any fight, and that was why we refused to support any operations that were done by King Lei. No nation deserves control over another nation, and given that this fight is over control of Earth Kingdom Lands, we felt not only obligated to help our allies, but to try and help keep the Earth kingdom lands in the hands of the Earth Kingdom where they rightfully Belong. the Fire Nation has no rights to be here, just like the Earth Kingdom had no rights to be in the Southern Water Tribe. I question your Firelord's rash decision to rush into war without some form of negotiation, but I admit that I am not the most knowledgable woman in politics, and so perhaps there were negotiations that the Earth Queen turned down, or maybe there were no negotiations of any kind from either side.

I do hope that this answers your questions." she nodded in conclusion. "For that is the explanation I have to offer you."
