Norio Fujiwara

Even from a distance, Ba Sing Se was larger than life to behold. That didn't mean he wasn't relieved to be rid of living in it. The great city was too crowded for his taste and too filled with dust and mud. The only clean places there were to be had you had to pay to enjoy. And you could never clean the air. You could lather it and lace it with all the incense you wanted, but fancy smelling dust was still dust and it still came out of your nose as a black grime which was hard enough on your throat without having debilitating respiratory attacks to be concerned with. Out here, the air was fresh. Fresher than he had ever tasted in the city. It felt good. It was almost like he wasn't handicapped. Although he knew that once his body adapted, eventually the effort of walking across the Earth Kingdom would fatigue his body and then he would have yet another reason to have trouble catching his breath. It was part of the reason he had originally wanted to settle down in Ba Sing Se to begin with. Big cities mean tons of people and even more nooks and crannies to hide in. But Norio sadly came to learn what everyone else who came to Ba Sing Se has learned: it's never what you expect and it's rarely as good.

He was just glad to be shaking the dust off his sandals from that place.

It was a long road to the Serpant's Pass, but that was the road he'd have to take. There were ferries that traveled across the lake and down the river, but he was sure he didn't have the money for those kinds of ventures. Better to invest in a strong pair of shoes. Time was cheap as was the energy to walk. He only wished he would have been able to afford more supplies. As it was, he was going to have to hunt to survive the trip, which wasn't so bad, but it would slow his progress. Not that he was in a hurry to be anywhere, but he wasn't sure what would happen if war broke out and he was trapped behind enemy lines.

"One step at a time there, Norio," He told himself, smiling at the memory of his mother's voice, who originally said it, "Your feet will find their way eventually."

Town by town, news of war spread far and wide. Norio began to worry that he wouldn't make it to the coast before the waters separating the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom would be too dangerous to sail. An iron curtain was falling on the EK border and he knew he didn't have much chance to escape it.

He was buying groceries from a farmer in some small village when he heard news that the Fire Nation had besieged Omashu. After a quick retreat from that place, he decided not to risk traveling through any Earth Kingdom villages. He knew his best bet was to reach the coast and look for any villages that were occupied by the Fire Nation and hope that he could get into it.

I guess I'm closing the thread due to rampant lack of participation
