Pain…plummeting…betrayal…darkness…bitter cold…
These were the last memories of a dying man, betrayed and left for dead.  The last sensation he felt was the numbness that enveloped his entire body.  But something was happening now.  Sensations were starting to come back.  Voices…he could hear voices.  He couldn’t make out what they were saying, but he could hear them, muffled in the background.  He tried to talk, but his throat was dry.  He swallowed and it felt like a cactus was stuck in his throat.  “Unnghh…” was the only sound he could make in response to the pain.  Slowly his eyes opened, taking what seemed like an eternity to adjust to the blinding light of the outside world.

Suddenly his mind started to snap out of its grogginess. “Where am I…” he whispered as he tried to look around.  His military training kicked in next, and he suddenly knew that he had to get out of here…wherever here was.  He felt his arms and legs, but there was no response from them when he tried to move them (a phenomena called phantom limbs).  After a long struggle he managed to lift his head enough to look down towards his arms and legs.  What he saw next, caused his heart to sink.  He had no arms or legs. “no…” he whispered to himself in disbelief.  What had happened to him he didn’t know, and there was nothing he could do at present .  “Help!” he called hoping that someone would arrive to give him answers, “I need help!” he continued, still in a state of shock.

Zurok Mia Takamatzu

Zurok was a believer in miracles--not so much because her own life had been saved because of them, but because she produced them all on her own. Some people said she was a witch--a powerful sorceress capable of all sorts of dangerous magic. In truth, Zurok was simply wise and knew many things.
and thus when the fishermen found a body in the ice, it was almost no surprise that Zurok disagreed with each and everyone one of them insisting that the man(or wahtever was left of him) was not about to get up. Dismissively, she shook them all off and took him to her own healing house, where she spent many concentrated hours using her healing magic on him. After what seemed like an eternity, the man finally stirred. sometime after removing the ice and such from him, she remembered who this was--Ronin, Meili's finest warrior back in the days of the war. He had been presumed dead for the last couple years, and given his current condition... that explained why.

the man started panicking, and Zurok was there to help.
"Shhh..." she whispered. "you are safe... and you will survive, albeit barely." she was not one to launch into a full-on explanation right off the bat, but if he asked, she would divulge.

Ronin couldn’t see the person beside him clearly; everything was still a hazy blur.  He could hear her voice though, and could tell it was a woman.  His initial panic at the sight of the little stubs that had replaced his limbs had already subsided; his warrior’s mind was no stranger to dealing with stress.  He took a deep breath, before tilting his head towards the blurry shape of the woman besides him.

“Survive?  What exactly happened to me?  My...limbs?” he asked in a surprisingly calm voice.  He was having a hard time trying to remember what had happened to him before everything went dark.  “I don’t remember much…”

Zurok sighed softly. it was never pleasant news to tell someone their limb (or in this case, limbs) had been lost to frostbite, but Zurok couldn't hold back the truth.
"you suffered severe frostbite out there," she began, "I am not sure how long you were there, but your limbs and part of your nose and ears... are gone."
she did run a bit of water over Ronin's forehead in a massage-like therapy.  "In fact, no one else believed you could even be saved. I thought it was little more than Rhino-bullshit myself, but I suppose my thoughts are neither here nor there."

"Anyways..." she continued, "you are in Zurok's House of Healing, and are obviously welcome to stay as long as you need. I can assist you in getting you a way around--for Queen Meili will definitely want to know that her greatest warrior is alive, even if there is little left of him." she did not mean this as an insult, but also knew that Meili would like to see him again, and, being good friends with Meili... knew of her doings.

“Frostbite?” echoed Ronin as the mysterious woman explained what happened to him.  His eyes suddenly narrowed as memories started flooding back into his mind.  “Yes…it’s all coming back to me now…” he said softly, “I was…betrayed…” His voice lowered, as he considered how his closest friend in the world had so ruthlessly turned on him.  The woman lifted her hand to Ronin’s forehead now, treating it with healing water.  The effect was very soothing and helped clear his head a little more as well.

The woman then revealed where they were, ‘Zurok’s house of healing,’ and it suddenly dawned on Ronin who the mysterious woman was. “Zurok…” he said quickly as he tried to sit himself up, “it is an honor.  My Queen Meili spoke highly of her ally in the north…”  Ronin did find it surprising to discover that Zurok knew of him, and her story about how others thought he was dead as dead could be was quite disconcerting indeed…just how badly was he injured?

He quickly shook off such thoughts and turned to Zurok.  “I cannot thank you enough, I owe you my life…and I thank you for your kind offer of letting me stay, but I need to see my Queen…her most elite fighting force is corrupt…” he paused for a moment before continuing, “I also…have some questions…if you don’t mind…I am struggling to get my head around everything that has happened…”

"A vile betrayal indeed..." Zurok agreed. few people ever took very kindly to the notion of backstabbing a comrade, and Zurok was not one of them either. she continued using her soothing magic on Ronin to help ease his pains and his mind. Surely both were rather heavy at the moment.

"Queen Meili and I remain on good terms, of course," she reassured him, "both the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes are stable now thanks to your efforts and the eoffrts of hundreds of others... so if nothing else, I do hope that you take solace in knowing that you have done great good for the world, even if it was nearly cut short."

"Do not fear. if you wish to see the queen, I can arrange that as soon as you are willing and ready. As for your questions... feel free to ask them. your condition is stable, and so your time is no less limited than anyone else's at this point." she chuckled. anything that he asked about, she would answer--to the best of her ability, at least.

Ronin felt comforted by Zurok’s words as well as her healing.  A friend of Meili was a friend of his after all.  Besides that Zurok had done the impossible and saved his life.  He smiled somewhat when at Meili’s statement about his actions in the war.  “I was only doing my duty Milady,” he said humbly.

He was pleased to know that he could see Meili soon, but that could wait until Zurok was finished the healing session, it really felt soothing and he didn’t want it to stop for a while.  He decided to ask Zurok the questions that were burning in his mind as she worked.  “You mentioned that the other healers thought I was dead and unable to be revived…and it sounds like what you did to me was impossible…” he said looking her in her eyes.  “Now I know your healers are the best in the world, which leads me to my question.  What exactly happened to me…” he paused for a moment, picking his words, “Zurok…was I dead?” he finally whispered, “and what exactly did you do to me that the others couldn’t?”

He was in no way ungrateful, instead he just rather curious about it all.

"And I was only doing mine," she smiled. while she had other duties besides those of a healer, it was in fact, one of her passions, as was politics. healing wasn't even her duty--it was something she had volunteered to do now and again, and so was considered quite the service to the Water Tribes and the world.

Zurok listened to all of his questions, nodding slowly as she continued to work her magic. "this is the 31st year of Avatar Zulera's reign... and the 83rd year since Sozin's Comet last soared through the sky. you were frozen out there for about two years--most people do not wake up from that, and that is why most people considered you dead. You are lucky to only come out of that with frostbite."
she paused a moment before continuing. "As for how I did it... let us just say that I do not believe that all bloodbending is evil, and that several abilities such as its healing power are erroneously labelled. However, that is my personal stance and I am not about to preach politics. suffice to say, you are alive and in stable condition because of it."

Such was her explanation. more would be revealed if he asked for it.

“Bloodbending…” whispered Ronin quietly, “I had heard tales about its power and danger, however I have never heard about its healing potential…” He paused for a while, considering Zurok’s words. “that is the nature of balance I suppose, nothing is truly one hundred percent evil. Used wrongly, any form of bending is dangerous.” He said with a smile. “You saved my life, and for that I cannot thank you enough.”

Ronin looked up to the icy ceiling and sighed, still enjoying the healing massage. “Two years?” he said in an almost unbelieving tone. “What has happened in my absence?” he asked, turning back to Zurok, “Is the Fire Nation still a threat? Is the world still in peril or at peace?”

Zurok Mia Takamatzu

"it is a very difficult procedure, where error can result in death of the patient. I suppose it is a good thing my daughter volunteered to be practiced on so I could learn--there was no room for trial and error!" she chuckled softly to herself. essentially yes--she had used the Avatar as a test subject.

"Not to say I don't know the deadly tricks, but I am here to save lives not end them. you are quite welcome in that same regard." she smiled politely. Zurok was a strange and sometimes unnerving woman like that, although Ronin was likely unfazed by her quirks and antics. This was simply Zurok's normal, witty, cryptic behavior.

"The Fire Nation is at peace, and Lord Tarek rules it with firm strength and sound judgment," Zurok explained, "and thus the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation are on good terms with each other once again. Since I am technically the ruler of the Northern Water Tribe, they are on good terms with us here too. The war has ended, and Firelord Novai was executed. afrter a brief succession crisis, the avatar returned and granted Tarek her blessing, which explains why he is there now."
With a pause, she began the final stages of the healing massage. "the world is at peace--and is prospering. Avatar Zulera has spearheaded the construction of a mighty metropolis that serves as the hub of her industrial revolution. there are also stories of an earthbending legend that rivals the queen in power and strength. She is able to manipulate magma even, an ancient technique that has not been seen since the era of Avatar Jafar nearly a millennium ago. Otherwise... the world is a better place thanks in part to your efforts, so rest easy. you have done many great things."

“A bloodbending healer bringing people back to life, a Fire Lord who isn’t power mad, an industrial revolution, and an earthbender who can bend lava?  Sounds like a very different world then the one I was trying to save!” Laughed Ronin.  Despite his injuries, he was far from a broken man, and he already seemed to be getting over his current situation.  As a veteran soldier and master of self-discipline, he was quickly adjusting. “Perhaps I am still frozen in a foot of ice and this is all a dream!” he joked.
After the massage was over, he thanked  Zurok again for saving his life, and answering his questions.  He took a few days to recover properly and process all he had learned in such a short period of time.  He spoke with Zurok about many things during that time and learned much.

When he was feeling better, and his mind had cleared, he asked one of his caretakers to fetch Zurok for him.  He smiled when she arrived.  “Milady I am in your debt, and I owe you my life amongst other things.  It pains me to ask any more of you, but I have no choice,” He started humbly.  “The time has come for me to return home and see my Queen but… I cannot get there alone as I am...indisposed,” he continued, looking down at the little stubs that replaced his limbs.  “I cannot thank you enough for all you have done, and I am at your service, and your family’s for as long as I draw breath.”

Zurok chuckled. "the world is always changing. we have always stood on the precipice of change. the world fears the inevitable plummet into the abyss. I simply watched for that moment, and when the time was right, I did not hesitate to jump. It was only after I fell that I learned how to fly."

otherwise, the rest of the healing massage went well and soon it was finished. over the next few days as Ronin continued to recover, and Zurok was there to answer any question or comment or other remark that he might have had. She was good like that.

Soon though, the time came for more change, and not necessarily the bad kind either.
"you wish for me to take you to Queen Meili?" Zurok offered, "for I can certainly do that." she had ample time and resources at her disposal, and so if a trip to Ba Sing Se was what they needed, then it was a trip to Ba Sing Se that they would get.
"Do not worry about repaying me, dear." she assured him, "Even the Avatar is in my debt, and not just because I was the one who squeezed her out from 'twixt my loins." she laughed, "I help people... it's part of the job description. Now... shall we arrange for our departure at a set date, or as soon as possible?"

Ronin grinned at Zurok’s comment about the changing world. “The world is very much like a battlefield.  You cannot plan for every contingency and you need to adapt on the fly to a series of dynamic variables.  Everything is always in motion.  You see Zurok…I do not fear change…I fear not being able to change when the time comes.  The ability to survive on an ever changing battlefield is not dependent on strength, or wisdom, or luck, but rather on adaptability.” He responded confidently.

When he was ready to leave, he was humbled once more by Zurok’s willingness to help.  “You have really shown me great kindness, far more than I expected from the Witch of the Tundra.”  He said with a knowing grin.  In his days recovering he had connected facts with old legends and pieced together that Zurok was mostly likely the fabled ‘Witch of the Tundra’. “Thank you again, you have done me a great service, one which I will not forget until the end of my days.”  He was ready to see the Queen again.

Zurok couldn't help but smile and chuckle again. "Perhaps it is because of that that I am glad I am a waterbender. change and adaptation are practically 2nd-nature to us, given that water follows the path of least resistance. It is always for the best to be able to adapt to the ever-changing situation that is life."

She chuckled again at the remark about the Witch of the Tundra. "aye, that is what some call me. Others, Zurok... the Maiden of Miracles. An old hag who talks too much! but in truth, what is a witch other than a wizard of the opposite gender?"
"Otherwise..." she smiled. "you are welcome. I am glad I can help. Now... I suppose we should prepare for departure then, yes? Everything else seems to be in order..."

Ronin smiled and gave a hearty laugh,it was a rare occurrence but pleasant to the ears and quiet contagious.  “Perhaps you do talk so much because you have a lot to say…you have definitely been a great comfort to me while I recovered.  Once again, I cannot thank you enough, no matter what anyone says about you…you will always be a friend to me.”
He nodded at her next comment. “Aye, let us be off.”

Ba Sing Se was not terribly far from the Northern Water Tribe, but Ronin still got sick several times Zurok’s ship due to the rough northern seas.  So when they finally made it to Ba Sing Se, Ronin was of course very pleased.  Zurok and Meili’s personal guard wheeled him to the Royal Palace with much secrecy, as they didn’t want the citizens of the Earth Kingdom to know that their greatest hero was only a husk of his former self, it seemed more prudent to let everyone continue to believe that he died in combat, defending his Kingdom.  He finally reached the Great Hall where he saw a sight he had not seen in years.  His Earth Queen, in all her splendour!  He bowed his head humbly towards the woman he had loyally served his entire life.  “My Queen…” he whispered softly before turning his gaze back to her.

Zurok smiled. "Only those who have a strong dislike for wisdom and the sharing thereof, will ever have a reason to despise me." she pointed out "Whatever the case, I am glad that I was able to help. I will always be there to further assist you should you need it." it was a sincere offer, despite how large it was.

Incidentally, Zurok piloted her ship by herself, and seemed to be quite skilled at navigating. The aging woman had a myriad of skills, and this was one of them. She did not spend 51 years warming thrones, after all. She was a doer, not just a speaker. Whatever the case, the old witch got them safely to Ba Sing Se. the guards tried to stop them by saying the queen didn't need any more visitors, well-wishers or distant relations, although Zurok instantly retorted with "And what about very old friends..." and that was enough. Soon they were in the presence of the mighty Earth Queen--and Zurok's status as Northern Chief had nothing to do with it.

Meili Mitali Zalika

Meili had been informed beforehand about Ronin's survival, although that didn't change anything when it came to her anticipation of meeting him. Being Zurok of course, the waterbender had given Meili the full report and an indication of what time and date they would be arriving in Ba Sing Se. Well... the guards hadn't gotten the memo, but luckily they had let Zurok in before Meili came down and knocked heads personally.

Still... it was an emotional moment for her to see what was left of the man that was once her finest warrior, and so even Meili grew silent.
"Ronin..." she whispered, "well I'll be damned... I never thought I would see you again..."

The Earth Queen’s words brought a smile to Ronin’s face. He adjusted himself so that he was sitting up more uprightly, revealing his face more clearly in the light. It was truly a horrible site to behold, scarred beyond recognition, with bits of flesh on his cheeks and nose missing entirely. “You should know my Queen…” he started, “...that it would take more than two years in the icy depths to finish me off.” He continued with a light chuckle. It was at that moment that he noticed the horrified stares he was getting from some of the guards. “They…um…wouldn’t give me a mirror…how bad is it?” He asked looking up at Meili. She had always been honest with him, and he trusted her fully. He was not ashamed of his appearance in front of her, because he received his scars in service to his Queen and country, and it was his honor.

Meili Mitali Zalika

Meili had seen some shit in her life, but this was also the woman that had stared angry Alcohol sages in the face before punching them in the teeth. She had also seen plenty of scary-looking hobos, but even they didn't match up to the grotesque remains of Ronin's face.

"But of course," she chuckled at Ronin's remark, "I don't imagine it would take me out either... although the ice is a brutal mistress, as Zurok can surely tell you. Speaking of..." when he mentioned a mirror, Meili conjured up a rock, shaping it into a thin, reflective slab for him to see.
"It... was pretty grizzly... but I'll let you be the judge." she handed him the mirror.

"Know that either way, I am not ashamed or frightened to see you... and I too believe you deserved far, far better..."

Ronin had not yet seen his face, but from the reactions he got from everyone who saw him, he already knew it would be bad.  His imagination however, could not prepare him for what he saw in the mirror held out in front of him.  His eyes widened for a moment, before he dropped his head, turning away.  “That’s quite enough thank you,” he said softly.  It took him a moment to process everything, but he quickly looked back up at Meili.  “My Queen…it was Minato, my brother…who did this to me…The Shadows have been corrupted and are led by my betrayer.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Ba Sing Se, Minato sat in a tavern enjoying the peace time with wine and women.  Since Ronin was gone, he could have anything he ever wanted.  Suddenly, one of the palace guards whom he had in his pocket rushed in, and informed him that Ronin was alive and had returned to Ba Sing Se.  Minato threw off the girls that sat his side furiously and stood up.  “Get my men together!  We are leaving Ba Sing Se immediately!”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back at the Royal Palace, Ronin twisted in his seat, he found it hard to ask what he was about to ask.  He eventually mustered up the courage and addressed the Queen once more:  “Meili…My body is broken, but not my spirit…” he began, “I am not what I was, but I cannot sit in a wheelchair for the rest of my life...I just can’t… I know have no right to ask anything of you my Queen.  But I need your help…”

Meili Mitali Zalika

The queen frowned at this new revelation. She had had her suspicions, but this had put them all to rest. "I had been worried about the activities of the Shadows as of late, but this simply verifies it... not merely because of this one man, but to know that they will go as far as betraying their own... I will not have such things in my organizations."
She had "purged" the Dai Li a few years earlier after rising to the throne, and now they were unquestionably loyal to her, as the leader of them. She could do the same to these Shadows as well.
"Ihave realized my mistake. I am hereby disbanding the Shadows Organization and will get the word out as soon as possible."

At Ronin's request, Meili glanced down at him. "There are many reasons why I am queen..." she began, "and only four of them involve my good looks. What can I do for you? Your wish is my command." she wouldn't ever just say that to anyone--she trusted Ronin's judgment enough to know he would not make an unreasonable request.

Ronin bowed his head before the Queen. “Thank you Milady, my heart is at ease knowing that Minato has come to the end of his treacherous road.  To be honest…a part of me regrets it…a part of me still loves him as a brother…” he said softly, “but he has made his decision and must be held accountable.”

Meili always had a wisecrack or two up her sleeve, and it was no different when she agreed to help Ronin out.  It made him smile, and he already felt more comfortable around her for it.  “Well…while I was recovering in the Water Tribe…I spotted some waterbenders using water as extensions of their arms.  It gave me idea…what if limbs could be fashioned for me…Limbs of an metal so pure that no metalbender save you or I would be able to bend them.” He explained.  “I spoke to Zurok about it, and according to her I shall need three things for it.  First a large supply of rare star metal, second a great amount of heat, and third an incredibly gifted smith to design and fashion the limbs for me.  I would also need a suit of armor and…a mask to accompany the limbs…with these tools, I would be able to fight again and live some semblance of a normal life…problem is I have no idea where to find these three things and have no means of acquiring or purchasing them…” he said lowering his head in shame.  It really felt like he was begging for a free hand out, but he really had no choice.

"Aye, I understand that trouble," Meili sighed, "but alas, such is the nature of great power and its ability to corrupt those we thought were closest to us. I suppose that is why it is good that the White Lotus could take me down if I were to ever stray down that path. But... I digress."

Hearing his request piqued Meili's interest. it was a rare one, although an interesting one that might be able to show a bit more of what the Earth Kingdom was capable of, under her glorious rule.
"Star Metal... I am capable of providing. I am no smith myself though, and I suspect that you do not want metal that is so easily bendable, and so perhaps it is for the best that I do not try to form your armor. However, I can certainly help finance it--perhaps as proper recompense for your years of service.
I do know of a smith in the Middle Ring... and I am sure he would enjoy the money. He is an artistic fellow by the name of Makusei Zhaoyin... also a renowned sculptor."

She paused and smirked. "as for the heat source... the lavabender that I spoke earlier of lives in Ba Sing Se as well. I do not follow her everyday life, but she knows of me and I know of her. She frequents the upper ring and a little place known as Dezna's... and I am sure I could bring her in for this if you needed. If not, I am sure I could contact Lord Tarek, although that could add several extra days for travelling, onto this timeframe. What do you propose?"

Perhaps thanks in part to the Avatar's philosophy, Meili liked helping people who were willing to help themselves. if Ronin had a plan but simply needed the resources or manpower to help achieve it, Meili would gladly help. That was the kind of man she knew him to be, after all.

Ronin raised an eyebrow, he knew of the White Lotus, but he didn’t know any members of the secret group. “You are one of the White Lotus?  I guess I should have expected as much.” He chuckled, “and I doubt you would ever stray from the path.  There is a reason I would follow you into the fires of hell itself after all.” He said with grin, “you are an honourable woman.”

Ronin let out a sigh of relief when he heard that Meili was so willing to help him.  It meant a lot to him. “Zurok mentioned that you would have the Star Metal on hand, and this Makusei sounds like the perfect person for the job!  I also agree about having the armor and limbs forged…working the metal with heat instead of bending will remove any impurities, making it more difficult to bend.  I will need that purity if I am to keep control of my limbs in case I ever face another metalbender.”  Ronin paused, “I appreciate this more then you know Meili…”

When Meili gave the option of visiting the lavabender or summoning the Fire Lord, Ronin immediately got an almost excited look in his eye.  “I would very much like to witness a lavabender in action.  Zurok explained the concept to me, but I’d have to see it to believe it!”  he said with a grin.  “perhaps then we should stop at Dezna’s before we make our way Makusei?” he continued before pausing, “erm…and perhaps we should get something to cover my face while we travel too...”

"Well... those who often say that they are above corruption are actually the most susceptible," Meili indicated. She might not have been the master of knowledge that Zurok was, or the giver of wisdom the way Tarek was, but she was far from stupid, even if her main strategy for most things was "smash things". She also did not explicitly reply to his question about the White Lotus--she simply smirked.

Meili nodded. "well... this woman I speak of is an earthbender with powers equal to my own. Perhaps she and I could put the metal to the test after it is forged--to see how easy it is to bend. if we have difficulty bending it--especially with you resisting, then I am sure that no one else could even dream of bending it."
She gave a soft, almost motherly smile as Ronin expressed his appreciation. "Anything for you, my friend." she reassured him. "Anything." Meili had only ever said this to a very select few people, most of which were in the White Lotus anyways--so for her to say it meant that he was someone special to her.

"Aye... to Dezna's we go. As for your face..." she produced some rather fine metal from who-knows-where, and began shaping it. "let me know how you want it to look." she chuckled. "I don't think we're going to get rogue metalbenders trying to twist your mask off--not this soon anyways." she chuckled.
