Tuezal Kai

For six long and hellish years, Tuezal Kai had been a prisoner; Held hostage by a ruthless band of mercenaries.  His wealthy parents were extorted, having to pay large sums of money regularly just to ensure his survival, but they could never see him or visit him.  The only solace Tuezal had during the ordeal was Tadashi, an old and honourable man who once ran the very group that kidnapped the young Tuezal.  Tadashi was betrayed by one of his own men and kept around as a trophy and a slave.  He was given charge over Tuezal, who was just a boy at the time, and was the closest thing Tuezal had to a father.  Tuezal Kai and Tadashi became family in captivity, and they loved each other like father and son.

It had been three years since Tuezal’s escape with Master Tadashi.  They were still on the run however, the mercenaries relentlessly hunted them, placing bounties on their head and tracking them wherever they hid.  For this reason, Tuezal and Tadashi had to hide out in the wilds, scavenging for their survival. They rarely went into populated areas.  However, after three years of vigourous training under Master Tadashi, young Tuezal had become a formidable swordsman and a skilled earthbender.  This meant that Tadashi and Tuezal could risk leaving the safety of the wilderness more often for supplies.  For this however, they needed money which they just didn’t have.

To remedy their money problem, Tadashi had led Tuezal deep into the Great Divide, to a massive underground cave. “I have known about this place for some time,” said Master Tadashi, “I stumbled upon it many years ago on a mission in this area.”

The cave was monstrous, with strange carvings on the wall and an odd mist that swirled around the cave’s floor.  Soft yet eerie whispers echoed through caverns and an uneasy feeling came upon Tuezal as they made their way deep into the earth.  “Are you sure this is a good idea master?” asked Tuezal, “something feels…off about this place?”

“This place is ancient, and the veil between spirit world and ours is very thin,” explained Tadashi, “don’t worry, we will not be here long…we will take what we need and leave.”

Tadashi suddenly held his hand up, gesturing for Tuezal to stop.  “Behold,” said he, “the ancient remains…of a Lion Turtle.”

It was breathtaking to behold.  In the largest cavern of the cave, lay a long dead Lion Turtle, perfectly preserved.  An air of power and majesty radiated from the noble creature, and Tuezal stood speechless.

“Quickly now!” said Tadashi as he tossed Tuezal an axe, “We need some of its bones…they would sell for a fortune and we would finally be able to buy our freedom and live some semblance of a normal life.”

Tuezal nodded his head, and before long, the two men had begun stripping the creature’s carcass.  Salvaging anything of value.  Tuezal used his bending to pierce the creatures flesh and break its bones into usable pieces.

Tzekel-Kan

An ancient spirit, by the name of Balreth, it was the prize Tzekel-Kan had just won. A tricky spirit. It was strong, stronger than most. It could move at an incredibly fast speed, shoot projectiles, and could seem invisible. He had taken quite a long time hunting it down, and now he had it, within him. But something bothered him...

Tzekel-Kan was hunkered down in a cave, a long forgotten cave, in the Great Divide. He was meditating, trying to grow in spiritual power. Balreth, what he had just consumed. Was he trying to get out? It was a feeling as if something was trying to escape from within his heart, but not physically. It was hard to explain, but it hurt.

Within this long-forgotten cave, lay the remains of a great Lion Turtle. His lion turtle. The one he grew up on, the one he first found out his true path in life. And it was now dead. The very air in the cave was full of spiritual life. It almost made Tzekel-Kan, the Spirit Devourer, shed a tear. But he remained strong.

Then something broke his concentration. He immediately focused on meditating. There it was again, a thudding noise. It now occurred to him that nothing should have found this cave, nothing else should be making noise but him. He silently got up in a crouching stance, and sneaked around one edge of the lion turtle. It took him a few minutes of moving to get around to the other side, the Lion Turtles being enormous.  What he saw when he got on the other side filled him with rage.

Two lowly humans, gathering the Lion Turtles bones!? One was an earthbender, and the other had an axe. They were desecrating the corpse!

Tzekel-Kan stood up, and with a loud booming voice, called to them. "YOU SHALL PAY FOR WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE TO THIS GREAT BEING!!" Not giving them any time, he ran at the one with the axe first, him being the closest one. Jumping off of a fallen piece of bone, he launched himself into the air to bring down his long nails and powerful arm, aiming for the man's head and face.

Tuezal Kai

Tadashi didn’t stand a chance against the Spirit Eater as it descended upon him.  Despite him being a master, he was very old, and just didn’t have the reflexes to move out of the way.  One swipe of the creatures hand flung Tadashi across the cavern floor. He hit the cavern wall with an incredible force and remained motionless.

“NOOO!” shouted Tuezal in anguish as he fell to his knees.  Tears rolled down his cheeks as he watched the man that been like a father to him die at the hands of some spirit creature.  “MURDERER!” he shouted as he stood to his feet, clenching his fists in rage.  He suddenly thrust his hands up, uprooting an array of boulders out of the cavern floor.  Tuezal spun around and performed a series of aggressive punches, causing the boulders to accelerate, shooting them towards the creature that had killed his master.  “I’LL KILL YOU!”

At those very words, something inside Tzekal-Kan stirred…Balreth, an ancient spirit of death.  Tzekel-Kan had devoured him, and he hated the spirit eater for it with such a burning hate that he started to fight back, trying to get free. Someone outside wanted Tzekel-Kan dead…and so did he…

Tzekel-Kan

Tzekel-Kan easily swiveled around and ducked underneath these boulders. He was hit with one once he felt a great tug from the inside of his spirit, making him immobile. He was sent flying backwards, thudding against a rib bone. The Spirit Devourer got up, hand clutching at his chest. This was NOT the time Balreth.

Tzekel-Kan, feeling the tugging recede a little, rushed forwards towards the other man. He zigzagged as much as he could while still gaining ground fast.

Tuezal Kai

Tuezal was genuinely surprised at the spirits agility it dodged every single one of his attacks but one, and even then it seemed like something else was hurting it other than him. He didn’t have time to worry about that however, as he was still filled with rage at his master’s killer.

When the spirit bolted forward, zigzagging to avoid any projectiles, Tuezal knew he would have to adopt another strategy. He thrust his hand into the ground and in his rage turned the ground underneath the spirit into sand, hoping to slow it down. With one hand in the ground, he immediately thrust his free hand upwards, loosening a stalactite from the caves ceiling and letting it fall directly in the spirits path.

Tzekel-Kan

Tzekel-Kan kept running on the sand until he heard the the stalactite crack and fall from the ceiling. He dodged out of their paths, rolling in the sand then running more. At this point, he was right up to Tuezal. Before Tuezal could do anything, Tzekel-Kan dropped down, knocking his feet out from under him then standing back up over him.

Tuezal Kai

Tuezal drew his sword as the spirit approached and heaved as he swung it at the spirits neck. The Spirit Eater was too fast however, and ducked out of the way just in time before knocking out Tuezal’s legs from under him. The young man lay on his back, looking up at the creature that loomed above him. His heart filled with the fear of his impending doomed as he realized he was no match…

It was over…

Tzekel-Kan

Tzekel-Kan loomed over the fearful creature infront of him. He leaned down and grabbed his skull, his thumb and pinky fingers at his temples. With immense strength, he lifted Tuezal into the air with one hand, his grip on Tuezal's skull almost crushing it.

Having an ancient spirit like Balreth gave Tzekel-Kan some powers. As Balreth was able to shoot projectiles, Tzekel-Kan would be able to do that too. Or, use it in other ways. And he was about to do so now.

Tzekel-Kan glared at Tuezal squirming, yelling at the pain Tzekel-Kan was inflicting on his head. It was enjoyable to see one that had done such a horrible act be in pain and suffering. Tuezal started to try to get out of the grip, punching and clawing at Tzekel-Kan arm. He didn't do anything, the Spirit Devourer was too strong. Tzekel-Kan gave a sinister, evil grin at the man, before bringing up his newfound powers to light Tuezal in a sort of spirit flame. It wasn't hot to the touch, but it hurt from within, and long exposure to it could kill living cells. He erupted this flame onto Tuezal, holding him there and watching him squirm like the worm he was.

Maybe using his powers were too much. He could feel Balreth struggling even more now. Getting stronger the longer they stayed within this most spiritual place and Tzekel-Kan used his powers.

Tuezal Kai

Tuezal convulsed as the spirit flames wracked his body in unimaginable pain.  His head felt like it was going to explode within Tzekel-Kan’s hand.  “W-w-what…are…you?” were his last words as he felt himself fade into blackness.  All the pain began to subside as he felt life leave his body.  Suddenly…there was nothing…he was dead.

At that very moment a voice rang out from within Tzekel-Kan.  “YOU DARE?!” it boomed, using all its strength to tug at Tzekel-Kan’s bonds, “YOU DARE USE MY POWER TO DEAL OUT DEATH!?  I AM BALRETH!  I *AM* DEATH!”

Balreth’s energy pulsed, using the death of Tuezal to fuel his power.  He strained with all his might against the Spirit Eater and would have caused Tzekel-Kan great pain in the process.  Finally he broke free, travelling through Tzekel’s arms and out his hand, immediately fusing himself into Tuezal-Kai.

Tuezal’s eyes and mouth suddenly shot open, shining forth with a bright purple-blue light that illuminated the entire cavern.  A voice that sounded like an amalgam of Balreth’s and Tuezal’s suddenly rang out.  “The power of death is not yours to command!  IT IS MINE!”

Tuezal’s eyes continued to shine as he grabbed Tzekel’s wrist and with unnatural strength broke free of Tzekel-Kan’s hold.  With a thrust of his free hand he impacted Tzekel’s chest open-handed creating a shockwave that threw both individuals across the room.

Tuezal’s body was still very injured and Balreth had expended too much strength breaking free of Tzekel.  He knew he couldn’t fight him head on yet and escape was the only option.  Balreth took a deep breath and in the blink of an eye vanished.  Only his last words echoed through the cavern.  “This isn’t over…Spirit Eater…”

Tzekel-Kan

Tzekel-Kan smiled even more once he saw the man's life drain from his eyes. But the joy didn't last long. A huge tug at his chest erupted, and a voice booming inside of his head was heard.

Then a huge surge of energy went through his arms, lighting up his tattoos as it traveled, and it transferred into Tuezal's body. The light that came from his body was almost blinding. Then a more booming voice came from Tuezal's body, giving Tzekel-Kan a sense of awe. Tzekel-Kan was in such awe, that he was powerless when he was pushed, flying back from Tuezal.

He looked up just as Tuzal and Balreth uttered their last words, and then vanish. He slammed his fist onto the ground, screaming in anger. That thing that he had hunted down for months in the spirit world, was gone. In some other human host. I wasn't screaming in angry at Balreth, but himself. He would need to get stronger before consuming another ancient and powerful spirit like Balreth. Much, much stronger.
